Couple stupid first timer questions

Hey guys/gals.

About to start my first grow ever with an all new setup. Just waiting on my Gelato seeds to arrive. I have a few newbie questions:

1: How many plants can I successfully veg and flower in a 3x3 tent? I was planning on starting with three, but I'm also planning on doing some LST and topping so I'm not sure how large these plants will really get. Any input would be great.

2: With feminized seeds, what are the odds that a plant could turn out male?

3: I have seedling cups, but I'm wondering about pot size for veg/flower. I have three and five gallon fabric pots, which would you use? Ideally I'd like to only transfer once.

4: I've heard differing opinions on lighting schedules for seedling/veg. Some say 18/6, others say 20/4. What do you guys think generally works best?

5: I have no reason to really worry, but how safe is a grow tent setup with a light and fans etc going constantly in terms of fire hazard? I have a Timber 2VL light and a pretty nice fan/filter setup with two additional cooling fans ready to go inside the tent. I spend upwards of 13-14 hours away from home for work frequently, and this is one of my main concerns.

First off, hi, welcome to RIU , this place is amazing for us newbies to learn from some good growers.


1. It solely depends on what you want to do. If you want very little veg time, you could go 12/12 from seed and fill the tent with 30-40 1g pots and let it rip or you could use clones and same strategy.....if you want to run a normal veg cycle you will want to keep plant count down to 4 max i would think. Any more than 4 in a 3x3 and its gonna get crowded in there.

2. Hermies happen for lots of reasons , good genetics will decrease your chances of seeing one, as will keeping your tent completely dark at lights out, no light leaks. So buy good seeds or cuts of good plants and you can def decrease your chances of seeing any hermies.

3. use them all. if your gonna run a normal 4-6 week veg cycle from seed, i would use all 3 sizes. i would begin in the seedling cups, then up pot to the 3gs and then a week or so before i plan to flip to flower i would move them into the 5g pots to flower and finish in.

4. 18/6 is the more common hours chosen, dont think it really matters that much. Me personally , i use 18/6...i like giving the plants some rest, i always find they look better when the lights come back on, after they been sleeping

5. The setup shouldnt be too hazardous, as long as you stay smart, obv keep any power/electrical cords off the floor and away from water. Your lights are legit, no worries there. Keep your temps and rh in check and you should be fine.

RQS says feminised seeds are 99.99% female, guess that leaves the .01% chance you could get a male!

If you're running photoperiod plants, you can grow only a couple and just keep growing them out in veg for as long as it takes to fill the tent. More plants just means you finish veg faster. Also, it's good to consider if you're using fabric pots, they'll dry out a little faster, so using the next size bigger pot than you think you need will help hold water longer.

^ Seconded. I've always done 18/6. Even my autos run on 18/6. I've not tried anything else but I've heard that the only benefit to more light than that is your electric company makes more profit.

To answer # 5 .
Nothing is ever safe with electrify ,,
But with that in mind you biggest worry is you fans cut out and your plants suffer a heat spell .
I spent 10 days away from this grow . all turned out well .

They dry out very fast if heat hit 80 + as now the plants are drinking more and the air is dryer

Hey Nabbers, thanks for the reply

So maybe grow 2-3 and veg them extra long so they grow to fill the tent? With training I assume that will increase their yield a bunch yea?

Grab a net and learn to scrog. You can definitely fill out the tent with only a few plants. Looking back on my first grow, I used a 2x3 tent and two plants got so big they were pushing out the sides and trying to wrap around the light as high as it could go. When you decide for yourself when to let them flower, you can get them about as big as you want. They're truly trees if you give them long enough. And be aware, once you switch them to flower, they still keep climbing for a while. At least with a scrog net you can turn the vertical growth on its side.

Also, too often over water or under water plants toward end of flower really boosts the chances of throwing bananas

1. 3 is manageable.
2. Virtually zero assuming the plants used to create the seeds weren't carrying the trait and they are truly feminized seeds. Stress can also lead to hermaphroditism, just something to keep in mind.
3. I suggest seedling cup then 3gal pots and flower out of there.
4. Either of those are fine.
5. Disclaimer: I am not an electrician. This will depend on the wiring in your grow room, how many outlets/circuits you have. Be careful not to exceed 80% of the Current rating for your circuit or you could start melting wires at higher duty cycles. If your grow room circuit is 20 Amps, don't load it with more than 16 Amps. This may mean having to run another circuit to that room. Be extra careful about using extension cords, no kinks or pinching and if they start to get warm, they're not rated for how you're using them.

Idk for sure wether he was asking wether it could herm or just be a male.

Also if its a breedable trait where do i getchermie free seeds from? (dont answer this last one its a trick question) :-)

Ya was that the grow you trimmed back at start of flower a while back, i have a great memory for everyones grows :-)
