CPAP Machine, now what?

Hubby needs a CPAP machine, he has a bad heart and the doc says this will definitely help. How do we know what we really need? The doctor wasn't all that much help and said the medical supply store would help us. Well, they just want to make a sale.

Any suggestion on types, what to ask, what we don't want... Is there any danger from buying one on Craigslist?

Advice would be appreciated.

I really would appreciate any help. My husband is scheduled for heart surgery on Sept. 29th and they say this machine will relieve some 'pressure' off of his heart. We know no one with one of these machines and reviews aren't too good either. It seems everyone complains.

He says, it is a waste of money. But, his heart isn't doing well.

WW, When picking them up on Craigslist, it's buyer beware. Although they are expensive, a lot of cpap machines I have seen give out after 6-8 years, so you may be buying someone's junk. Has he had a sleep study done? You'll need someone to enter clinicians mode in the cpap and set the ramp, etc.. He'll also need a mask. There are full, partial, and nasal masks. Your medical equipment company will have disposable fitters to measure his face and nasal openings. Resmed and Resperonics are among the better brands. It's what we sell where I work. Insurance will pay for one machine every 5 years and a mask every 2 I believe,as will Medicare. They are definitely not a waste of money :)

Yes, he has had his sleep study. Doc says he has a pretty bad case. She said something about him waking 200+ times a night. I don't know how that can even be possible.

Thanks, I really was looking at Craigslist. From your advice that is now a no-go.

I don't think anyone likes CPAP. Having something strapped to your face is not comfortable at all, I don't think you will find a good review. But they do help, if you care about your health listen to your doctor if you don't like what the doctor says get another doctor. If he tells you the same thing you are probably in denial. Many people, including myself don't listen to our Dr's. Your husbands heart needs the air supplied by CPAP therapy to help heal the body and itself when he is asleep. Without oxygen during sleep his sleep is largely ineffective and his cells are dying.

I hope your husband has a beneficial surgery and I will say a prayer for your family and his speedy recovery. Heart disease runs deep in my family mainly through poor behavior.

Thank you, all prayers are needed. I'm too young to be a widow. I'm going to check out the links - thanks again.

I use one at night myself. They are not too comfortable to start with but you quickly get used to it if you stick with it. The thing with sleep apnea is that every time you stop breathing a jolt of adrenaline goes to the heart taking years off your life if left untreated. He will wake up feeling much more rested also.
