Oxygen-rich and a faster drying medium, makes a great root system. Great roots make great buds.
One of my first grows was an apartment grow with way too much light (ended up with slight bleaching). I used an organic soilless amended coir mix that was just phenomenal... easy as shit. I top dressed with some organic high PK stuff in flower once or twice... otherwise I just used good old Long Beach tap water. I had my ladies in 5-gal buckets with holes drilled all over them and a screen inside to contain the coir. Those buckets were in another 5 gallon bucket that had an air pump pumping 24/7. When I watered the plants, I could see bubbles all throughout the coir. My medium was super-oxygenated all the time.
Even with my temps reaching far above 100*F (top floor apt w/ no AC), and my buds were touching my cool tube (hence the bleaching), and I was a total noob, they were some potent buds. And that root system... wow. Completely filled the top bucket with roots and they were still popping out of each hole and dangling into the bottom bucket. Some of the healthiest roots I've had.
Long story short... ever since, for any soil grow I did, I used some sort of fabric pot... either DIY or store bought. Not quite as good as my original "system", but almost... and much less hassle.
