my eyes are hurting from reading so many posts on curing... Plaese Help!! last harvest i just hung in closet then jarred for a month opening jar for 15 mins a day. taste got a little bettter as smell diminished... to a grassy smell really.. wanted to try something different so did some research..Whats with the paper bag??? anyone do this? better Results? and do i leave jar closed or "burp" 15 mins a day?? any help will be appreciated

After You've hung up your buds to dry they will be smokable material. enclosing your buds in a air tight space leaves moisture locked in, there will always be a small amount left. leaving a paper bag with the buds lets the moisture be absorbed by it which is better for your buds. Opening the jar is good if you didnt leave your buds to dry for suffiecit time. otherwise if they are properly cured and left with paper or other moisture absorbing material it will only mean more moisture getting in the jar. okay so, i used a brown paper bag for my first harvest, it worked well. but now i just keep them in droors when they are drying. when i burp it it's for about ten seconds, you don't need to do it for 15 minutes. once your buds are dried you want to burp just to release the excess moisture that is building up, not remove all the moisture.

on some treads ive seen people hang dry then paper bags then jars does the paper bag make any difference?

i'm sure the paper bag doesn't make much of a difference, i haven't used it in a year and i don't plan on using it again...
you can just hang dry them and jar them up, then burp 'em.

how long do u jar for? ive heard so many different timelines. jared for 4 weeks last time and buds dint smell untill i broke em up and tasted a little better

Ive gone straight from harvest to the brown bag; then jar with excellent results. No hanging involved.

When placed evenly in the bags and moved often, they dry quickly but not 'excessively'

There could be better ways, but im using the same method on my currently crop and hope to have as good results.

just looking for a base line on how long to cure for in general. Is there really a major difference between curing for 2 weeks vs curing for 4 weeks?

I've been hanging and then jarring up after they dry too.. I was actually wondering the same thing because my buds look and smell good but I have to break them open and smell them out of the jar to really get a good smell otherwise it just smells kind of green still.

it's very hard to gauge just how much moisture is buried in a partly dried bud
i've started using a humidity meter(for cigars) described on another thread
i've gone from novice to good results, excellent flavor and odor from my 2 cures using a meter

Taste can get iffy at all stages of the process. First makes sure all your water leaves (fan leaves) are trimmed off completely before you start drying. When you hang your plants to dry be sure they are in a dark, cool, dry place. You want the buds to dry out slowly and naturally but fast enough where mold doesnt develop. Nothing is worse than trimming up the prize cola of your harvest and cutting into white powdery mold. While they are drying check them at least daily to see how they are coming along. When you can take a branch you have hanging and can break it cleanly you know the buds will be dry in the center as well as the exterior. take those branches and trim them up. Here is a vital part of keeping wanted flavor and getting rid of that grassy taste/ smell. Trim off all the sugar leaf! You should see only calyx's (buds) also means no shake at the bottom of your jar. the less leaf and stem their is in the curing process the better the flavor will be. So now all your buds are clean shaven and ready for curing. Take your clean mason jars and jar em up. Make sure their is enough room for air to travel throughh the buds (airflow is key). You should be able to turn the jar and the buds move freely. Store them in a dark cool place and take them out twice a day to burp the jars and turn the buds so all the surfaces get air commonly. I like to cure for a month but every grower, smoker, strain, etc. has their own opinion on this. When you feel they are ready (meaning aroma and flavor are peaked) take a nug hold it to the sky and load it up. Any other questions let me know.

I actually tried amn's advice and I think part of my problem,"maybe yours too..?" was having to much stem material in with the buds..?? I cut the visible stems out and it seemed to help a lot with the smell! I'm also on like the 4th day of curing and I didn't let these 2 branches dry for to long before putting them in the jar.. I'll keep you posted if I get any better results, what strain are you growing?

i think i have blueberry but i got it from a stranger so..who knows really. ive been retrimming all day getting every little stem an leaf and just jared.. so ill keep you posted as well. my temps were pretty high during flowering and some of my sugar leafs curled up starting to think that's my biggest problem..buds aren't very sticky and trichs are not very visible to the naked eye..any input on heat stress?

FYI , after drying/curing/burping etc. I usually keep my weed in jars in my cold storage till I run out ... usually about a year if not more.

Let us know how it goes, I just noticed when I jarred up the main cola of the short rider "Pretty solid bud" it smell pretty good. I'm not sure if it was the main cola or because I just took the big fan leaves, hung it and let it dry. Then went back through and cleaned it up! Also the other buds that where smelling earthy lost a little bit of the earthy smell after being cured for around a week.. To bad it was pretty much gone by the time it cured lol..

i had that problem with some juicy fruit. but now i stick to mostly kush strains.
they never really smell bad ever. from triming it to hanging, to curing it.
it does always improve tons after curing it of coarse. but i had that hay smell
on the juicy fruit. and my buddy had the hey smell on some juicy fruit also.
so i really think its upon strain.

Yea thats kind of what the shortrider is, like a fruity type of smell when you actually break open the bud.. I'm growing a kandykush right now, about to take 3 clones and let it recover then throw it into flowering. :) I can't wait until I'm drying her!!
