Curing Questions

Hey all. So I have recently started my first grow in years, and only my 3rd overall. I am not to the curing stage yet but I am trying to plan ahead. Is it feasible to use a coffee canister to cure in instead of a Cvault or some such? I know I could just use jars as well, but I am after a way to burp the curing vessel little or not at all.

So the coffee gator can I linked above is airtight but will let c02 escape. It's also dark inside (no keeping jars in the back of closet) and I can buy replacement c02 membranes if I need to. I was thinking of using this can along with a remote weather monitoring system to monitor the temp and RH inside the can. I was also planning to use an integra boost 62% dehumidifying packet inside, just like the Cvault uses Boveda Packs. Seems boveda claims their product eliminates the need to burp at all, hence my questions about my proposed setup. The coffee canister lets c02 escape and I know c02 is created as the bud cures. Would it be feasible to keep this all closed up throughout curing so long as the humidity was managed and the c02 was able to escape? I am willing to burp if necessary (costs me nothing) but if I can avoid it that would be great.

PS - I also came across this curecork doodad that is supposed to prevent the need to burp but it seems pretty damned expensive.

I've had the most success and seen others have the most success using plain jane glass mason jars. Air tight, and you can buy dark amber ones that block some 90+% of UV, although it's not hard to put them into a light proofed tubaware box to avoid UV degredation of your trichs. I'm not sure if there is an easy way of getting around burping your jars as you do this in order to extend and draw out the duration of the curing and moisture release process so that as much cannabanoids as possible are metabolized into forms that are psychoactive and produce positive effects vs the form of THC that will produce head aches and undesirable affects commonly associated with smoking uncured buds. Just my two cents, and if any of my information isn't dead on my apologies, but that's my experience.

I store my crop in tinted Mason jars, quart and half gallon. For curing, I do a 7-10 day hang and then put the flower into paper grocery bags until the moisture levels stabilize. Then they get jarred and burped for a week. After that, they are good for long-term storage-I do use Boveda's.

I've tried a lot of different methods over the years, and basically, do the same as Gbauto describes minus the bovedas. Once my bud is dry and in jars, it's good till I'm ready to smoke it. I've never seen the need for the bovedas, but my bud doesn't ever last for many months of storage, its always gone to fast for that.

A good slow dry will give you the best flavor and smoke quality. The paper bag makes sure the moisture content is uniform, and then the jar locks it in for the long term . When my weed goes in the jar it already smells and tastes basically how I want. The jar just holds it like that.

Burping is essential. Unburped jars won't develop the strong, complex flavors. Burping a cure jar is not about moisture. Curing isn't drying. Curing needs fresh air periodically. 2 weeks without burp will ruin the buds ability to cure, locking in the fresh flavor. It takes 3 seconds a day to burp,any longer and that's called drying.

Airtight is not essential until it's exactly where you want, then it's essential. Boveda will ruin cured bud in one night, so o don't know how it could ever be used to cure in their first place. If you dont want to burp, use plastic bags, they let gases exchange in both directions, fermenting valves don't.

I'm fairly certain most internet growers don't understand curing. It'll turn a dirt flavored bud into candy flavored. Hash flavored into skunk, grapefruit juice into sugary lemonade, sweet into sour. Its a big chemical change. The word curing gets thrown around a lot.

Burping exchanges air plus removes the gas off made during cure. Bovedas are for Long Term storage ( aiding in maintaining stored RH ) , if you plan to stock up cannabis for long term storage then they help keep it hydrated. But if you are going to consume as soon as they are cured then its a waste of money.

They pull and push moisture... nothing more nothing less.

It is FAR BETTER to learn the ropes of curing using jars and burping product so that way you understand the conditions needed. WALFART has cases of wide mouth jars for like $13 bucks.

Look at getting hydrometers for the jars instead of boveda at this time. Cvaults are mostly a variation of storage containers other than glass , they work pretty well but jars are cheaper.

100% agree with Budzbuddha...I just don't think that there is an easy alternative to burping your product for a proper cure. Glass jar, cvault jar, whatever you may choose to use...I only use boveda in cases of accidentally drying out buds too much, in which case the boveda only helps to keep them from becoming brittle and crumbling. It sucks buying rh meters but it is worth it, or at least until you have the process down pat.

You can grab these from amazon for like $15 bucks for 5 ... i use them .. they are cheap china ones but work ok.



There is some minor drift among them but they will work.

I usually put them all into an empty mason with a boveda 62 and leave sealed overnight... then any that are a percent or two ( + or - ) i pull thise put a sticker on back with the percent difference .

You can also move them to new curing jars as the other ones have stayed the same for awhile , so you can rotating among jars. They are extremely helpful in determining if buds STILL need a little more drying. Then you can lay out buds for a little bit and check again later.

OK sounds like I am trying to make this harder than it needs to be. Thanks all for the recommendations.

I have those came in last week

The integra 55% packs are nice for long term storage. I keep one with my personal just to keep it a bit moist
