Customizing Foxfarms Ocean forest soil, Suggestion please

So I purchased some FF Ocean Forest soil. Well, I dont plan on mixing up to much however this is what I had in plan as far as concept wise.

I want to fill the bottom with some kind of material. I dont know whats best, large gravel, hydroton rocks, this is where I need help! I want something that will help with water as well aerate the soil somewhat.

On top of that I want a mixture of FF Ocean soil mixed with apx 50 percent perlite. Probably just a inch or two of this layer.

Then I want to place the FF ocean Forest soil on top of that layer without mixing it with anything, unless some of you experienced users recommend something that really does work. After all, I am quite confident the FF ocean forest soil will be very good on its own seeing how its already got a great mixture.

I would use Pearlite on bottom, grab the bigger stuff to use for bottom and then Only 20% for mix with FF. And use just FF do not add anything else. FF has enough guano, etc. if you add anything you run a High risk of a Hot medium.
I use 15-20% pearlite and FF Ocean Forest and I have great results everytime.

Does perlite come in different sizes? I only seen the small pebble like size. Just curious. As well do you recommend a layer on top of perlite of mixed with ff and perlite then just ff soil? Or do you recommend prelite then the ff mixed with 20 percent perlite?

I figured sticking with FF ocean soil and perlite would be perfect due to the composition of FF ocean soil

ff is good the way it is. throw some hydroton rocks on the top and your all set. from seed, dont feed nutes until 2-3 weeks which will then be the veg stage once you see rapid foilage.

Perlite comes in big chunky and small rounds, its good for the bottom if you don't have a good draining pot. 20% mixed with FF O.F. will work good and you can add a drop of dish soap to you water/feed to help water flow faster through medium.

Do not fuck with it. Do nothing, no perlite no hydroton nothing. Lots of people have different strats when mixing soil but as you are a beginner you should start with untouched FF.

Why? Consider this, if the above growers have never tried without perlite or hydroton then they really dont know if it helps or not. If its something you always do, you have no frame of reference to whether it really makes a difference. If in your next grow you want to use these additives youll be able to evaluate its effects and make sure your not wasting your money.

I encourage you to try it untouched. FFOF has plenty of perlite, drains great, lots of nutes in it.

73 days in 5gal FFOF no nutes.

Thanks you have a recommendation on where to get the chunky perlite at? I think I should be able to purchase that at home depot or lowes right? A dash of soap, wow never new that, thanks.

So to make sure I understand this correctly. Chunky perlite at the bottom. Then on top of that, place the OCean FF soil mixed 20 percent with the small perlite. Then water ( I use a gallon of filtered water) place a drop of soap into the gallon of water then water accordingly.

On averageo when do you water? I was thinking about purchase a moisture meter.

You need a pH meter and yes you have it right, on average I water in veg useing T-5s every other day, and in Flower useing several 1000 watt hps I water/feed daily. It all depends on your heat and you know you can lift pot and tell if it is holding water, but a moisture meter is a good Idea.

SpeedHabit is giving good advice.

well I used perlite for the bottom for drainage and mixed the perlite in with the FFOF soil. I update my grow journal.

I added mylar around the walls and a few more fans for circulation. I took the rapid rooter and placed in the soil today. I believe I am using 5 gallon buckets. I figured that will be a good size bucket so my roots are root bound to much, after all I am growing in a closet.

WOW speed' you grew that just water and ffof. thats crazy and good proof that they market all those freakin products to bank on when in reality a solid soil and good ph'd water will do it. Especially after seeing that beast;-) nice, I just leave my plants through veg w/ FFOF and start feeding right b/f flowering with a good dose of G big then just conitue through w/ bloom nutes. around 5th or 6th week ill hit them with a lil more G big though.

Yea I figured for first grow I may hold off until later on to really feed it the grow big nute. I figured the soil already has alot of nutes, let the roots thrive on that then give it some nutes.

I am doing a practice run with two plants. I gave nutes two when I watered. It was diluted at 1/2 teaspoon of grow big per gallon.
