Cut some Fan leaves?

Ok. 1,000 watt light. 6 plants. 6 x 7 grow room. I got some bushy little beasts and need a little advise. My father in law told me that if I cut the big fan leaves, since there are so many leaves and branchs underneath, that the loss of the big fan leaves will not affect the amount of light the plant intakes and that the bottom branchs will produce better. He has a pro-grower friend that does this.

Any thoughts? I'm 4 weeks into veg and want to veg another week before going 12/12.

I definitely cut my fan leaves. You can either take the middle three sprigs of each leaf and trim them back 50 percent, which will allow the leave to live but not grow any further, or cut the big ones off. Thats what i do. Use disgression, dont cut em all but nothing wrong with a trim for sure.

Jesus, do NOT cut your fan leaves. They are the engines that grow your plant. Photosynthesis works by surface area. The more surface area you have collecting light, and the closer to the light that surface area is, the bigger and stronger your plants will grow.

NO! Don't touch them. that is some of the worst advice ive ever seen, are you sure this friend of yours doesnt like to make stuff up or maybe didnt understand what the "pro" said? If anything you snip off the smaller lower down stuff, its called lolipopping and is so your plants root system only has the main buds to support. so because the root system can only support so much foliage its better to not have it wasted on the little popcorn buds and that stuff and instead focused on the tops along with improving air flow. Fan leaves are the main and most effecient energy producers and storers, cutting them would be foolish imo(no offence meant to anyone, just sharing my thoughts). you see some will say they block light to this or that spot. well, heres the thing-leaves are nowhere near as solid as they look to us, only 15% of the light that hits a leaf interacts with chloroplasts for photosynthesis and 85% keeps going. so your very very very slightly increasing the amount of light the shaded area will get at the cost of the main energy makers for fast new growth.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm still confused, but Dark makes sense. But, if your lower leaves collect that light and there is more of them, would they just take the place of the shade leaf for photosynthesis?

exactly my thought! As with everything involved with growing, you can ask twenty people and get twenty different answers. I can show you some plants that put out 6-8 ozs each that have all had their fan leaves trimmed. I dont have 11,000 posts so i must not know what im talking about. its cool

The fan leaves are far more efficient at photosynthesis. It's best to just bend "lst" them under the lower branch leaves, so the lower branches get more light.

don't do it, cut out the lower budsites instead, the flowering will be redirected to top colas and those big fan leaves will help fill them up with resin.
his "pro" grower is a fool.
