I just cut the top bud on one of my plants she is in her 13th week (auto ) and most of her hairs are brown , can't tell about the tricomes as I bough the wrong loop glass to see them, but I found a green caterpillar , just examined the rest and did not find anything else, removed the caterpillar and put it in a plastic cup.
hope it does not ruin the bud I cut off it's about 6" long and I'm going to juice it.

It'll be just fine buddy.
I've done selective cropping on mine a time or two. Took most tops & left the bottom nugs to finish up. Worked out pretty good 2 if I might add. 
And on the caterpillar, I wouldn't worry 2 much if you didn't see a ton of um. They won't eat much anyways..
