I grew up with parents that were raised on farms that were greatly impacted by the great depression. Even though both my parents worked we always had a large garden and we always had a few pigs , chickens and cows for milk and beef.
We always had canned veggies and salt cured pork and both of those things were items that I made sure that I fully understood how to do prior to my dad's death. I have a large supply of canned vegetables and 2 hams & link sausage hanging now. I get great satisfaction when I eat something that our family has grown or raised.
