You can try adding everything from moth balls, to soap, to piss, to every pepper you can think of...if you don't put a physical barrier between your plants and a ravenously hungry deer, then it's a 50/50 toss-up on whether you'll have leaf damage from a deer.
A hungry deer can and often will walk right through/by a possibly objectionable scent.
It'll be enough to deter a few deer initially, when whatever magic potion you try to sprinkle around the plants is still strong. But over a few days even, a lot of these chemicals/scents you put around your plants fade in strength/pungency.
Just my two cents worth, but I would strongly recommended deer netting. It's hard to see from a distance of 30 + feet away, so even if there are passersby in the forest, they'll likely glance right through it, and
not notice it.
You could use this Ross Netting (found at Amazon), and it'll cost you about $20-$25 for about 100 feet worth (6' in height):
