I remember the first one when it was called World Party (in 1994) at Joe Louis Arena and lost a ton of money. It took them 6 years to recover from that loss in order to be able to put on the DEMF in 2000 at Hart Plaza. You can't blame the festival promoters for charging - they no longer receive funding from the city of Detroit that they used to get ($350,000 a year) and even with the admission they barely break even. Just be thankful that people are willing to do this year after year to celebrate Detroit's historic connection to electronic music.
