Designing a 32x40 shop

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I will be growing in a 32x40 ft shop. Ceilings are somewhere between 10-12 ft. State laws will only allow up to 72 plants to be grown at one time and that includes clones, veg and flowering. Clones will be done at another location so those are not an issue. I will basically need a room for veg, flower, storage and water. My budget is somewhere between 80-100k I am wanting to maximize my yield per plant since 72 is all I can grow. So I am here asking your thoughts on HPS vs LED and Soil vs Hydro. I want the most bang for my buck but also care about efficency and energy consumption. I am open to anything at this point. I will be starting this project in about a month. I will be cleaning the shop out over the next few weeks and prepping it for wiring, plumbing, and foam insulation. Any and all responses are appreciated. Hope to hear from you guys and gals!

I posted a very similar thread last week. Basically what I have learned is this audience is a mixed bag. My building is 30x40 and my estimates are between 40-60k to correctly setup before lights. It really matters how much ac you need, water sources, local climate and what odor controls you plan to install. The more I look into hydro the more appealing it becomes. My state doesn’t have a plant number but if it did I would absolutely go hydro. I’m going to get flamed here but I would build out my own system. You can build a commercially viable system for 60% of a Prefabricated unit. I’m going 1k hps on the lights as I have them readily available for hardly any cost. I would do LED’s if I had the extra cash. But considering I’m out of pocketing the whole venture with cash on hand and this isn’t going to be my primary source of income I’m planning to roll any profits into upgrading fixtures ASAP. Best of luck and don’t burn up all your investment capital on construction/startup. It’s a long road from clone to cured.

HURKA DURKA EVERY BODY! I HAVE A MANSION IN THE ALPS WITH A GIANT WINDMILL AND UNLIMITED WATERFALL FOR ENOUG POWER TO RUN FIFTY GAZILLION LIGHTS WITH AN UNLIMITED BUDGET.

WHAT SHOULD I DO GYUZZZZZ????

Not everyone has chosen to be poor and irrelevant.

32x40 will take like 50 1kW DE's if you are gonna run the entire space. Of course you probably want an area for veg to keep mothers and root clones. Probably need a drying and trimming space as well. Figure out your floor plan and then you can see how many lights, how much AC and dehumidification. Those are gonna be the big expenses. I'd toss an AirROS machine in there to prevent mold / mildew right from the get go. Probably want a CO2 generator and CO2 controller in there.

Plants dont look like they will even hit the second level of trellis.
Yeah, I know. It's there as a stretch goal for something that my girls can reach for. This is only my second grow and first time with any kind of training so I wasnt sure what topping and SCROGing would do for the height of the plants.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a huge support group where I will be doing this and they have built probably 5-7 rooms start to finish. They have done Gavita 1000 de lights and 20 gallon soil pots and got 50 plus lbs several times with only 30 plants. They have another where it's strictly Gavita 1700 leds and got 25lbs with 18 plants in 20 gallon soil pots too. But their last run was only about 15 lbs. Looked like it could have been an issue with genetics and a bad veg imo. I am very interested in doing hydro but they were not sold based on what they have seen people do locally. Ideally I'd like to do all LED and hydro because of efficiency and automation, but I'm not sold on yeilds yet.
I will not need a clone or drying room because those will be off site.

So you're hating because I have saved and want to invest a certain amount into this keep up the sarcasm buddy. Just wanted some genuine feedback on trends and etc since there are people here currently growing and staying up with trends and trying out new things.

Dont mind what he says. Most guys around here arent setting up a grow like yours but there does seem to be a clear divide between "i need to grow weed and my budget for the entire grow is $100" and "i want to grow weed and i understand it is not cheap and i fully understand this is going to be a big investment". Thats why i sent you to @Renfro, he specializes in grows your size.

Ignore the morons. Good luck with your endeavors and keep posting. I’m still stuck waiting on the state to figure out how they are going to issue licenses. I called again today and they didn’t have a clue how or when they are going to get a system going. lol. It’s a good thing the state constitutional amendment we passed has a mandate to be operational by July 1 2021.

I was planning on figuring out how I wanted to grow first before figuring out the layout. All the other necessities are a given when going this large. Ample AC, CO2, dehumidifiers and humidifiers, carbon filters, scrubber and etc will all be in there and on controllers. I plan on doing things right and not skimping on quality.

Thank you, I will keep posting and eventually start doing grow journals once I get up and running.

Well for that size of room efficiency is a large part of success. So I'd say 1kW DE HPS or LED 160LM/w +. Don't buy an LED that does less than 2.1 umol or 160lumen as you might as well go with HPS. For your cooling I'd spend more on a more efficient A/C but also weigh that with reliability (multiple units let you keep going if one fails). My heart would explode of happiness to plan and set up a room that size. You are living the dream man. Can't wait to see what you do.

This will be in Michigan and they haven't really approved many micro grows and only approved mega multi million dollar grows by very

I was looking into Scynce Raging Kush, Gavita 1700 LEDs, and Gavita DE.
I know Gavita has a new led coming in January that I may wait and see about looking into. It will take me a at least a month to prep and get things ready before I make a decision on lighting.
They have been using a local ac company that has amazing same day service. I think their business model is built on servicing AC units for grows. I'll certainly make sure we have multiple unit for that purpose alone in case one unit fails.
Also thanks for the encouragement! I'm super excited to get to work on this. It's been a passion of mine for a long time but I've owned businesses that have kept me staying in non legal states. Luckily I'm freed up and getting to live my dream and be close to family in a legal states.

Yeah that's where I'll be. Towns are being weird about not approving micro grows and only allowing the mega grows to come in. We had one guy tell us that he was on a township board that would make sure it got approved for us if we paid him $150k.
Also we are working on getting approved for transport and processing.
