So i have embarked on my first grow. Me being gung-ho about this type of thing i went all out and bought (at a great deal i might add) a GH Rainforest system. http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/rainforest%C2%AE-aeroponic-systems-c-33_452.html Not from this site but this unit. I bought my plants as clone(just two atm) that were in a soil wick type grow. Well i washed the roots as best i could and planted in my full hydro/aeroponic system. Well stunted growth ensued, as i would have guessed, and it seems to have taken a while for anything to happen. Some of the larger leaves turned yellow and then died altogether. One plant is and was much worse than the other, which i believed to be caused by my net pot liner, i believed cut off nutes or perhaps drainage; so i repotted that plant.
then later I diagnosed(perhaps mis) the problem as a potassium deficiency. as most seem to do i added more nutes and nothing changed. further research led me to believe that the water i used was no good(i thought perhaps too high sodium, or other) so changed with distilled water and fresh nutes. after about a week the plants seem to recover, although one still worse than the other. Girlfriend pruned the bad plants dead leaves while i was away for a few days.
Now the plants both show new growth but still some discoloration... at last, however, my testing supplies have arrived. Great success
First thing i did was check PH; 5.2. Not great, not horribly horrible. Really not sure how bad this is. I added 2 gal of 7.2 distilled water last night to try to bring it up a bit. Getting some PH up/down today.
Next was the PPM. PPM settled at 1080 on a Hanna unit. Note that i am still in Veg so this, i believe, is very very high. The plants did not seem to show typical signs of nute burn, but then again that could be it. This also prompted me to add 2 gal of 0ppm distilled water to bring it down to about, guessing, 800-900. If this is the case is this ppm livable for another week or so before flushing fluids?
I will add that up until a few days ago i had no root growth outside the net pots on either plant(ok maybe a half inch on the better of the two) then 6 days or so after last check i have a few long roots beginning to dip into the solution.
ANY comments, questions, suggestions, etc are GREATLY appriciated and i really do mean that
I will also update this afternoon with new PPM and PH readings.
Pics below are of the plants as of last night. one of each plant.
Thanks again
