an incumbent president taking a stance on a hot button issue one day after 15 of his most highly sought after electoral votes overwhelmingly said otherwise is anything but desperation or cowardice, it is courageous and ballsy. real ballsy.
he might as well have said: "north carolina, take your 15 electoral votes and go fuck yourselves".

so, your logic is that obama is doing this to boost his chances because he knows it is inconsequential? which is it, a boost, or inconsequential? it can't be both.
many independents, with respect to gay marriage, have views evolving in the same fashion as obama's views evolved. they have friends and co-workers that are in committed, same-sex relationships and see no reason why they shouldn't be able to get married.
your analysis is pretty pointless if, like you asserted, this issue will not define this election.
what is relevant is who controls the news cycle. and with precious days ticking down, obama is seemlessly controlling the news cycle as he did in 2008 with romney in an unenviable position.
