a good rule of thumb is speak your hand under the light for couple mins on top of the canopy and when its just warm and your not burning your hand going ouch fuck that hot then it should be alright ;) adjust as neccessary if see any negative side effects.

about 12 to 14 inches,,just put the back of your hand on top of the plant and if it is too hot for your hand raise the light

The other consideration is coverage. The higher the lights, the more area getting light. Less intense light, more coverage. It's a trade-off. 1000 watters can provide adequate light further away than 18", IMO.

I keep mine anywhere between 12" to 24" usually around 15" most of the time. just make sure they dont burn your hand when your checking distance and that means they wont burn your plants

all depends on air circulation and heat control, some people can get them closer then others. the hand to the top of your plant trick is the best, aslong as its not hot on your hand your plants will be fine.

Great chart, TaoWolf. As I thought, 1000w can support a lot of area. Another thought is that the plant will only make use of those extreme lumens up close if everything else is ideal: nutes, CO2, temp, humidity, PH, and other stuff I'm sure. If you don't care about covering max area then I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm sure commercial growing concentrates on giving the minimum to the maximum numbers of plants though... Guesstimating those are 1Kw lights at around 30" provides ~5K PAR. Which is the ballpark minimum required for full growth. The benefit is a greater light spread, which equals more plants per light.
