Been researching compost and got a itching to understand what humus is and i found this little gem. This article clarifies the distinction between compost and humus in their scientific and colloquial terms; providing a description of both and their applications. here is the link: http://faq.gardenweb.com/discussions/2766363/what-is-the-real-difference-between-compost-and-humus
good link.
In my mind that's what I always thought, only to me, I wouldn't ever use my compost until it's finished anyways.
Although I did use it as a mulch last yr for my comfrey that was transpiring water too much.
more importantly, the thing with using compost before it's done, is it has the varying ph fluctuations (a perfect example why ph'ing organic soil is pointless) also when it breaks down, it often sequester nitrogen from the soil, and may even increase the temps of the soil depending on what is going on.

The thing is, humans don't really know exactly WHAT humus really does, we just know it works.

"how exactly does a posi-trac rear end work on a Plymouth? It just does"

(side note, if you really want to know how a posi-trac works, I can tell you, sadly I know)

Well compost can provide our wonderful plants the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Humans kinda suck. They're kinda ignorant and arrogant and tend to be selfish. So humans really just suck sometimes. But compost is cool.

Yeah, most humans would rather turn to stuff that's going to destroy the world, just so they can have piece of mind. Well we got news for the rest of the humans. Nature is better at replicating itself than science is at mimicking nature.
