DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

general question on wiring , can you use solid wire between cobs & then use stranded for the rest of a build ?
all the holder I seen the solid would just be easier to work with being stiff & you don't need as many attach points
Do know it's way easier to push solid wire into the solderless holders you have to tin the stranded shit or risk a single stray strand of copper & lotsa AL around
Ideal holder is great for 18AWG stranded wire.

Is there any reason to not run CXB3590 36V and 72V cobs on the same driver? I don't think it should be a problem, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

Hello all and would like to say thank you to the guys who share there knowledge on DIY cob building. I have been reading and watching videos and really enjoying the DIY tech talks.
I am going to start with a small build then keep adding. To start I have chosen the following due to what's available at the time. Just waiting on jerry to get back on a price.

4 cxb3590 top bin @ 3500k 72v
1 HLG-240H-C1050A:
Going from what I have read and using the Cree characterisation tool I think the driver should run them all. What I'm a little unsure about is that here in Australia we run at 240v.
Will it be ok for all 4. Thank you.

Edit. Math work out it will run 3. What about the 240v, is that an issue.

I was just about to ask about stranded wire, because yesterday I ran through the entire city to find solid core wire, which unfortunately doesnt exist. Luckily it was much easier to read these 116 pages, than to ask the question about whether I could use stranded wire. I should go for a wire that is approved to run about 300v, right? Im trying to get all the miscellaneous before the important parts get here, so I know it to be doable. Thanks a lot! :)

Most of the heatsink & hardware will show today or monday(stranded wire here on Sunday Amazon) & should be rocking over plants in days after
Again ThanX alesh for the stranded Video

Fry's sells 18awg 300v solid core. It is not as flexible as stranded but a non issue if you pre-bend your wire and chamfer your thru-holes.

Home Depot/Lowes I've found to be pretty useless for the parts I need.

I don't think there is a problem, but they won't emit the same light levels.

Thanks PB!

After I posted my question and I thought about it, I came to the same conclusion, i.e. that the 72V COB would be twice as bright as each of the 36V COBs. Well, not twice as bright, due to lower efficiency, but brighter and put out more heat.

I may put the 72V in the middle of a bar and the two 36V on the ends. I have few MW drivers HG120 @ 1.05 AMP and 148 volts, so I can run four 36V or two 72V or one 72V and two 36V off each driver. I'll probably give it a try.

Should be fine form what I see: Input Voltage: 90 VAC to 305 VAC. 240 is between 90 and 305 VAC.

I like to run the CBX3590 at 1.05 amps. I run four of them at 1.2 Amps and they are nice and bright. I think you will like your results. Jerry will get you your quote quickly. Chinese New Year might delay things a bit.

Thanks for the reply gents. Just needed to be certain.

A pair of 120H-C1050 drivers will power your 4 COBs and their input voltage range is 90 ~ 305VAC. I'm sure you'll enjoy making and using your new light. Good luck on both.

I live around the corner from Fry's lol like 3 minutes car and 10 minutes bike lol

What driver is suggested for 14 - CXB3070s? I'm wanting to run either 1050 or 1400, but I'm not sure there is a driver I can max out efficiency by maxing load. Should I just take away two of the LEDs so I can drive 6 per string?

HLG-240H-C1400 can run (5) CXB3070 @1400mA
HLG-185H-C1400 can run (4) CXB3070 @1400mA
HLG-240H-C1050 should be able to run (7) CXB3590 @1050mA (confirmation welcomed)

Thanks for that. As I understand it, the CXB3590 and 3070 are both 36V COBs, so wouldn't the HLG-240H-C1050 also run 7 3070s? Or is there something I'm missing? That would be ideal, driving 7 per driver. but I can also run them hotter and pick up two 240H-C1400 and one 185H-C1400.

They are not the same the CXB3590 are a little different on efficiency that's why you can run 7
