There's some good strains out there that have been bred that give that happy medium most look for, it's hard to tell others what's good because each person has their own preferences
Like me I'm a indica dominate person that likes to grow in a SOG setup so I'll need a strain that doesn't stretch or branch out real heavy leaving me with a single main bud, I prefer to grow 4 plants per square foot in square pots I had a pheno from sensi seeds pre 2002 of afghan #1 that worked great it would grow one solid bud inside but outside turned into a freaking shrub it was awesome but as everything good things come to a end.
If you want a fairly productive plant that doesn't compromise quality try some sour diesel or green crack, I found a awesome video on YouTube of a room of green crack look for the 8000 watt green crack grow (I promise you will be impressed this guy has several awesome videos)
