got 18 gallon tubs which are 18" high. I was thinking of cutting them in half and making them only 9" high.

Gives me extra space to grow. thoughts? ??

I know what you mean. I thought of that but didn't do it. I think with the roots in the water like that you don't have enough space for the water to move and get oxygen to the roots. Instead I got an under bed storage container and some PVC and sprayers. Its about 7 inches tall and drains to a separate res but I shortened it up some and got more vertical space to grow.

i don't even know if it needs a bubbler to be honest. couldn't i just HALF fill the RES and it'd get oxygen that way??

You need a air pump in a dwc no matter what the setup. i have two 6 inch air stones in my 4 gallon res. keeps the water moving and keeps o2 in the water. standing still water becomes stagnant quickly.

1 gallon per foot of plant is the rule. Your 9 gallon res will be sufficient for 9-1' plants or 1-9' plant or 3-3' plants, etc.
Also I am finding that a submerged air hose works better without an air-stone. The big bubbles work better to agitate the surface of the water in the res than lots of tiny bubbles. A study I read concluded that it is the motion of the surface of the water that oxygenates it, not bubbles moving through it. The problem I was having was that the root system would stall the bubbles and impair their function to agitate the surface of the water in my res. Hope this answers your question.

check out my aero box, I get ten plants for a 5 gallon rezzy, but as PPMs climb during the week and water gets absorbed I will top all my rezzys with RO water then balance PH. I just recently added airstones in both the rezzy and my sealed aerobox. I had no real issues without airstones, but just added them because I had some extra cash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQYWhx6KT58 this is a week after transfering from clone box. two days prior I trimmed and knocked(bent) everything over because they were streching so fast. I enjoy abusing my girls while theyre young, they love it too! This will be my SOG, and it will be full of nothing but amazing kolas.

week 2 veg, I dont have that much room for roots, sprayers dont get covered by roots in my boxes. I use 5 gallon buckets to every 10 plants, all which will grow to at least 30 inches. Im breaking the 1 gallon per foot of plant rule though.
you said sprayers... are you talking about an Aero system?
