Do I really need to worry about flir?

Using a 1000w HPS/MH Light? I plan on venting hot air back into the house during the winter, so I will be putting the heat to use.

Yes, a 1000 watt hps would be fairly noticable I think by equipment that looks for a heat signature. Id imagine cooler lighting like LED would be stealthier.

yes you should. I got FLIR out here to come do a demo, pretending to be a fault finding expert.

Those scanners are so sensitive that you can see a lit cigarette 20km's far on a cold night.

I walked across the room and back to where the guy was standing.(with shoes) He tuned his little gun and showed me my footprints like the heat left behind from where I steped 3 mins later.

My eyes opened.

I feel like a 1000w light wouldnt look much different than an electric heater, lots of houses have wood stoves... which would be way more intense.
How do they look thru your roof and determine the cause of the heat?

They put the scanner on a large spread and find the houses that is hotter than then ones next to or around it.

After finding a "lit up" house they will try find the heat leak.(vent's) (using handheld device from patrol car.)

If they find your heat leak your pretty much fucked.

Sorry to say it guys, but FLIR shouldn't be anything to be scared of. In most states FLIR isn't admissable in court as evidence because you need a warrant to FLIR somebody's house. Meaning they won't give a cop a warrent to search your house based off a previous illegal search.

It will give cops suspicion, but without any other evidence, FLIR is nothing to worry about. Just don't get caught stealing electric to run a big operation!! THATS how most big time growers get caught, not FLIR

Do we know for a fact that the OP is American? If the OP is British, they probably should be concerned about FLIR, as it is used warrant-free throughout the UK. Apparently in the US they need a warrant to point FLIR at a specific house if what I've read is true. Not so in the UK from what I've read.

i'm pretty sure there's something you can line your room with to block your lighting. someone here prob. knows the what and where's of it...

I know exactly what your talking about but it's fairly expensive, as it's military grade stuff. I forget the name but I know you can get it as a paint or a lining similar to Mylar. But it's really not feesable for everyday use

Apparently the roofs of the Gorilla grow tents are lined with an infra-red blocking material, but as I understand it, it's only the roof and not the whole tent.

However, in theory, even if you were able to block IR leakage on all sides from your grow space, would that not simply create much more heat to vent and in doing so, defeat the purpose? The whole room would need to be lined with something and then the heat would need to be vented inwardly, which may not be a problem in winter, but in summer......

I would guess that in a scenario where you're trying to escape being visible to FLIR, the easier issue to examine is heat generation in the first place than heat management.

Put a insulation cover on the light. Use insulated tubing to draw air through light and into house. Less heat signature.
And Mylar cover the room.

I find that shutting down the grow room at night also makes it difficult to spot from afar. I have my room go active from 9am to 9pm,so when I sleep, so do the Ladies.
Flir is damn near worthless from the air in the daytime, it is a night that it has the contrast to work with.

I was planning on running the lights at night, but you made a good point. They have a harder time detecting during the day

farmer.... trust me it dont matter what these flir cameras pick up the police wont be alowed to just kick your door down and risk injuries to children and shocking elderly people based just on thermal images... trust me they need alot more intelligence to what you are actully doing.... for example they might knock and talk and claim to smell cannabis but never never unlock a door to a police officer talk through a window and say you dont have a key
