Ideal! I've always thought a bigger fan turned down has many advantages.

Re variac... I'm a dinosaur lol I've done a bit of research and found some modern fan are electronic computated meaning that they don't hum (amazing) the fans I'm familiar with are ac fans, if you turn them down without a variac the buzz like hell.
Every day is a school day I now know for future reference.
