Fungus gnats are a minor annoyance that's very easy to take are of. They definitely should not be a deal breaker, or even much of a consideration. Yes they can cause problems for young plants, but that's only if you sit back and let them.
-Already have an infestation? Crumble up and soak a chunk of Mosquito Dunk in a bucket overnight and drench your soil with it. Do this 2-3 times in a row, and you WILL break the life cycle of your gnat infestation. Do it once, and they will likely be back (adults still flying around will lay eggs, and you're back to square one).
-For prevention, grind up and sprinkle some Mosquito Dunk on the surface of your soil. Maybe 1/2 tsp per pot. Also, allow the soil surface to dry out between waterings (a fan under the canopy is key here).
This is just one of the many ways to handle fungus gnats, and it takes a total of about 10 minutes of your time to wipe out and prevent the problem.
On another note, have you looked into making your oil from FOOD GRADE alcohol like Everclear (assuming you are "of age")? That way you can avoid the (unknown) chemicals they add to rubbing alcohol to make it unpalatable (and quite possibly unsafe for
consumption).
