Do you believe the gov. should have the right to impose seat belt laws?

Do you believe the gov. should have the legal authority to enact and enforce seatbelt laws?

Because everyone makes money. From the farmers to the doctors struggling to pay off school loans. Imagine if you had a good paying job at a tobacco company. Would you feel guilty?
Actually, yes I did feel guilty about selling hand rolled, long fill premium cigars. So I quit doing it. Now I grow more weed than I ever sold cigars and I don't feel a damned little bit guilty... because my job and my product don't hurt anyone!

But guess which one I have a felony for?!

All are good points stated above. But the real reason you are being pulled over is a chance that they might find drugs or anything else that can make them money.

I've checked out police forums, and I listen to the cops comments. One of them stating "every time I see someone with a burned out license plate light, it's always a doper" you must understand how cops think first. Then it all makes sense.

We should just go Matrix for real. Induce people into a coma and pump nutrients and oxygen into their body. Encapsulated in a comfortable cocoon. Feed dreams of happiness directly into their mind throughout their span. Keep them safe. They will be safe and never know the difference. It's best for us.
Free heroin would be cheaper and we already have the technology.

One day you are going to look back on your life and regret all the time you wasted caring about things that don't matter.

There's a good point for seat belt laws that hasn't been mentioned here yet. It's this: by not wearing your seat belt, you can indirectly contribute to the death of another person. Because Emergency Medical Service (EMS) is a finite service.

Imagine this scenario:

1. I get in my truck for a drive.

2. I don't put on my seat belt.

3. I get into a moderate crash. If I had been wearing my seat belt, I wouldn't have been hurt. But because I wasn't wearing my seat belt, I was injured enough to require EMS.

4. About the time that EMS starts driving to my crash site, a woman across town has a heart attack. And for some reason, EMS is over-taxed at that particular time, and no EMS can break away to help the woman in time to save her life.

So, my irresponsibility in not following a reasonable seat belt law has indirectly contributed to the death of another person.
You are at fault for your own butterfly effect.

If they don't have a reason to pull you over.
They can make one up

We don't need a law making it illegal not to wear seat belts. We just need to educate people that seat belts save lives.
I don't wear my seat belt because I have to, I wear it because it has already saved my life at least twice now.

This argument could be used against any laws;

"We don't need a law making it illegal to murder people. We just need to educate people that murder is wrong."

"We don't need a law making it illegal to steal things. We just need to educate people that stealing things is wrong."

...

Seeing that the collective well being is ultimately a more efficient way of achieving the goal, the utilitarians argument for wearing seatbelts seems to hold.

So my guts, lungs, elbows, knees and other miscellaneous chunks of flesh and blood don't need to be cleaned up? Just my brains? Is this really your argument?

I don't want to post graphic pictures so I'll let you go ahead and google "motorcycle wrecks while wearing a helmet".

Helmets do not prevent accidents. They only protect the individual. The individual should be "allowed" freewill. That is the most "morally correct" thing to do.
i currently live in one state, and work in another.. i see people all of the time cross over the bridge, going into the other state, pull over to the side of the road, and take their helmet off once they reach the second state..
i happen to think they're nuts for doing so, but hey..

Helmets help prevent death, that's the argument

If you die because you weren't wearing a helmet, it comes out of taxpayers pockets. If "the individual should be "allowed" free will" to result in "the most "morally correct" thing to do", then why isn't the taxpayer's free will equally valued?

If you wearing a helmet potentially protects taxpayers from paying for your death/clean up, why shouldn't you be legally obliged to wear a helmet?

Seat belt laws?
What about about these guys? Are they doing something wrong?
Imo, no, the intensity of pleasure derived from proximity flying outweighs the potential cost to the taxpayer in the event of an accident, even at higher rates of death (1/100). Strap a gopro on their head and that amount increases even further as more people can enjoy a comparable level of pleasure without the risk
