hey all, my mom has a trick she uses on the plants right before harvest. she opens them up more by pinching the 5 point leaves that the plants will no longer be using.

we've had some fucking amazing harvests, but I'm wondering if leaving the fan-leaves might do something different to the buds?

my mom is convinced they turn out better with the fan leaves off when they no longer need them.

but I've heard that the plants take back nutrients from the fan leaves as they yellow, so it may be beneficial to the buds?

what do you guys think?

What does she say the benefit is? Like, why would cutting off the leaves help? I don't understand.

That bit you said about the plant using stored nutrients in the leaves during flowering is true, from what I've read.

Seems to me like more energy=more buds, and the energy comes from photosynthesis which is carried out in the leaves.

the only benefit she seemed to convey was the taste and opening the plant up for more light.

but yeah, I think I'm gonna convince her that's not doing any good.

I would never pinch/trim those leaves. They are there for a reason.Look @ what each one is attached to.Sure more light is good. But there are better ways to get light in.But thats just me.Happy farming.

im curious as to why she thinks the plant no longer needs them? when the plant no longer needs them it sheds them itself, millions of years of evolution and i dont think it needs our help.

those leaves are the solar power production facilities of your plant. the buds are the solar power storage sites. very little photosynthesis takes place in the buds so removing leaves that are shading buds is counterproductive.

leave 'em. if i have lower bud sites that wont get light, i remove the bud site. less buds means the plant makes the existing buds fatter.

A lot of people think by pinching the fan leaves that the buds will receive more light.

The thing is, the fan leaves are providing the energy for the buds to grow. So no, I leave all the fan leaves on the plant until they completely shrivel up and die on their own.

The plants know what they need a lot better than we do.

so you guys have had amazing flavor from plants that you didn't pinch at all?

the ONLY thing making me think this could possibly help is flavor. my mom had some of the best tasting bud I've ever had in my life, from anyone out around here. (and this is nor-cal . . . )

but yeah, I'm pretty much sold on it not being helpful . . . I just want to know that flavor isn't affected negatively by leaving the fan leaves.

the genetics bring the flavor. and curing helps too.

alright well thanks for solving this little dilemma for me. hopefully I can get her to believe me in time, but I highly doubt it . . . . just have to grow my 6 plants differently I guess.

I'm sure you guys understand how stubborn mothers can be :D.

yeah she's very cool when she has a good supply of buds and a low stress level ;).

stress is very bad for moms :D.

I pull the tips and if the leaf pulls off (easy) then I take if not it stays. Like SlikWiLL13 said trust evolution and the plant. It knows whats best for it.

yep I'm pretty much gonna do my 6 plants no trimming whatsoever. I'll let my mom do whatever ;). maybe she'll see how nice my buds turn out and she'll stop doing it haha.

you are supposed to trim the leaves off AFTER it's harvested. do NOT smoke the leaves. removing the leaf matter from your final product WILL make it taste much better. do NOT smoke the leaf. :)
