So how come NFT hydro systems run 24/7 in relation to this thread? I'm looking for an explanation rather than kicking up any "dirt," here as to say, just confused a little bit...

surely plants would be covered in mould and fungus and as DRFever says, it rains in the dark at nights, I don't see plants getting weighed down in some sort of fungus hell?

One is confuzzled a little here...
With NFT or aeroponics, etc. the roots are always exposed and without water they'd dry out. With ebb and flow or soil, the medium holds moisture and thus the roots won't completely dry out.

The way you need to look at it is, How is the feeding cycle done in the wild, The weather dosnt rain every other day at a specific time.. It rains when it rains the suns out when it out the only definitive thing about the wild is the time the sun comes up and goes down and even this changes from week to week. Water the plants when they need it lights on or off. I like to water just as the lights turn off. This way the plants take up all they need in order to get another good days growth in!!!
