ok plants are outside. when the females hits sexual maturity do they start to flower? or is it strictly based on light and darkness (12/12)?

this may be only my 2nd season growing, but whats been said here isn't completely true.
this very much depends on where you live, what's the climate and genetics, along with many other variables.

i planted 1 ams bob marley 15th of may (from seed), it is still growing (sativa dominant, already showed sex-fem).
then 2 weeks later started 6 bagseed ak47 which was an awesome smoke, seeds looked awesome so i germed. 5 fems, 1 of em is already in 4th week flowering, all others are growing and starting to show signs of flowering.

so ya know, it all depends. im growing in a country that gets no more than 14 or 15 hours of sunlight, im pretty much sure that in 27c and no signs of revegging after 4-5 weeks of flowering, it doesn't really think, oh its winter, i better start flowering.
i learned it the hard way, you can't control plants and mother nature like you can in an indoor grow.

that's what i love about outdoor growing, plant is totally under the mercies of mother nature, but that's where it came from. then again, to each his own.

Plants flower based on how much light they get unless they have ruderalis in them. But every strain will flower under different conditions, because strains all do not come from the same place. There are strains that will flower at 14-15 hours of light and some that wont flower until very close to 12/12.

well its over 2 ft now and its starting to show sex (95% sure its female) i had two of the same and the other done showed nuts so i pulled it. so im guessing this is taking longer that it will be female. and im kind of hoping that it flowers a lil early then the three smaller ones flower on time. thats what i was kind of hoping for we will see though
