Does giving your clones 24 hour of darkness really work?

hey guys and girls I watched this video on youtube a while back and the bloke on there said he puts his clones in to 24 hours of darkness after cutting them to reset the plants clock so to speak. Have any body tried this mephod before he said the plant root faster by doing this.

I never have, that's new to me. I think that if the clones were taken properly and in the right environment, they will root fast. No magic tricks, just the simple sanitize equioment5, 45 angle cut (I do this under water) and then in to what ever medium you're using. I use a hydro or Aero cloners with no dome. 75 degree room Temps. 100% success rate for years keeping it simple.

Edit: I'm not sure what the darkness would accomplish bbesides further stressing the already stressed clone.

I can see this working but never tried it
often take cutting in flower and the clones can root in 6 days
take clones in veg and it will take 10 days+

so maybe this could work :)

What do you mean by resetting the plants clock?. By doing 24 hrs of darkness you will start the trigger to flower and you don't want that. Veg plants and clones need 18-24 hours of light to prevent the flowering process.

I agree with this.
it gives the plants a chance to concentrate on roots instead of vegging.
I wouldn't think 24 hours would make a difference in non existant root development (new cutting), but since the cut was part of a vegging plant, it would trigger flower, then the plant would stress by changing back to veg a day later. Cutting a limb and completely changing light cycle to 0 light for a day would seem counter productive, even if it some how did make them root, I think the stress caused would out weigh the benefits. I could be wrong. Because I don't know the science behind this.

I do, however, put my clones very far away from my floro lights, probably 2 or 3 feet away and no directly under the light.. Until they root... Then they go under the light.

If anyone has any facts for the complete darkness, I'd like to hear them, I'll be taking new cuttings in a couple days

Can't remember the name of the video other wise I would up load it also first time cloning with peat pellets in a heated propogator any advice on keeping them moist if any one has used them in a heated one before thanks

The facts are this: 24 hours of darkness(on rooted or un rooted) will trigger the chemical change to flower, not grow roots. That is as simple as it gets for a photo period specific plant. It will stress them and cause longer rooting and vegging times. I have many different strains that go straight to cloner from being cut, and only non ph'ed tap water, and all root in 7-11 days. Don't think you have discovered the unknown when its well documented. Just try doing it right until you have some experience because I have over the last six or seven years done thousands of clones and only lost 3 or 4 and that was my fault from badly positioned sprayers. Its a very simple and easy plant, don't make it hard.

Even if you say you get faster rooting from flowering plant cuttings(none of my 40+ strains do this) the added re-vegging time will by far be longer than then the time saved.

The power went out once while I was in the middle of cloning. Within a couple of hours my clones went limp. Only a few survive so my opinion is 24hrs of darkness would not be good for fresh clone, but that's just my experience:hump:.

just keep water in the bottom tray, those pellets will absorb what they need to stay moist.
