Does mulch help hold in the smell?

Gear Acquisition Syndrome eh? Geeks are always getting GAS.

Personally for top dressing I'd just focus on guanos instead of smelly fish.
Yes I have gas. In more ways than one. Lol...I kinda feel like the smellier the additive, the better it works. Lol

Guanos work very fast, and aren't stinky. If I were to use a fish product, I'd lean towards fish hydrolysate.

EDIT: This is a good fish/kelp product which also has microbes and benes.. https://www.bloom.city/collections/supplements/products/supplement-root
I've been experimenting with guano. It's a hot amendment so I'm cautious with it and try to mix it into a mix and let it cook a little first. I've actually got a bunch of different guano's, and am slowly incorporating them into my mixes.

And ya, fish hydrolysate is good stuff and doesn't reek like emulsion. Neptune's Harvest is a good one.

Could try spraying top layer with some em1. One of it's uses is to neutralize odors in septic so suppose it would work here with some additional benefits.
I was going to post something similar. I'd just brew up some LAB myself. It will do the same thing as commercial products. In fact that's what is in many of the commercial products being sold to control odors in a variety of industries including livestock and sewage treatment.

LAB is easy to brew up and extremely inexpensive to make.

I keep hearing not to use the guanos. I believe Jeremy from bas suggests against them also. How are your results from them?

I haven't experimented with much of it yet. I do add a little seabird guano to each batch of mix. I haven't used much of the other stuff yet. Just a few times. It's definitely hot. I added a tiny bit straight once and some of my pistils got burned a bit. I don't have that problem when I cook my top dress first.
