does the soil matter?

Yea man, there are 5 parts to growing good marijuana, each part counting for 20%:

Air(Temperature, Humidity, CO2 content)
Light(Spectrum,Photoperiod, Amount of light)
Medium(soil,)
Nutrients
Water(pH, O2 Content)

These elements make up the essential needs of Marijuana.

Cheers :)

I will speak from a new growers experience here, but I started my plants in regular old Miracle Grow soil. Garden if I am not mistaken. I decided to switch to Fox Farm about 2 weeks in and am very surprised by the results.

See that Miracle Grow stuff is a general growing medium, meaning it will support most plants. The Fox Farm is a specialty soil. And dont forget the age old adage, you get what you pay for. My two cents, for what its worth, is to not use Miracle Grow soil, period.

Hey guys, I'm new to the site, I've been lurking for a little while now. On my first grow, I had experienced difficulty balancing out nutes with FFOF, but I eventually learned that additional nutes aren't needed in a soil that rich. I prefer to have a soilless mix or a soil with little to no nutrients, so I can have more control over plant growth.
