I had the pleasure of owning a small tanning salon / gym accessory business in the 90s. I always had 3 part-time workers, and hired them from a women's college nearby - usually already members of the gym that were already tanning w/ me. So I didn't have to do interviews, background checks, and such. But I did always ask one question of them to make a point:

I think a lot of it is willfull ignorance they refuse to acknowledge that other countries have different laws and feel their states law, which isn't even their countries law, should supersede all others, it's borderline retarded. Could you imagine if someone went to the US and had the audacity to try and abide by their countries laws instead of US law. I think this is your opinion and youre stating it like its common. I know Mexicans definitely say theyre going to the us and Canadians probably also. Saying youre going to america would be correct if you were going to any of the americas, whereas saying Americans bitch about things is incorrect here due to the fact that its not all americans. Its a very small percentage from the us. I won't argue against that. But we're not discussing that right now. We're discussing seeds and how it seems strange it's mostly the americans having "issues".
And yes, the USA and america are not the same things. But this is the modern world. In the same way that anyone in europe is just called a european, people in the USA are americans and usa has beomce synonymous with america. Noone sais "i'm going to the USA" they simply say they're going to america. Just the way it is.
Ignorance and stupidity is promoted here instead of shunned. We (USA/Americans) still fight the concept of science (prayer in school, rejection of evolution, climate change), we lock up more of our population than any other nation, even those we call out for political prisoners, we institute failed economic policies, fuck with nations that pose no threat to us, believe our form of democracy is the only one (poll Americans and dumb asses could not tell you who our secretary of state is or the difference in a parliamentary system), and have failing schools which we privatize to further neglect the poor and minorities. Plus we are entirely ignorant of other countries and policies they've rolled out.America has more stupid people because their are more Americans, it's the way I have always looked at it. They get a bad rep. because their loud minority is larger than some countries, their loud minority is also paraded around on TV cause it's "good news".

Maybe not over that side of the pond, but you'll simply have to trust me when i state that it is. I know it's not correct, but it's just how it is. Rarely do i hear people talking about the USA, it is almost always simply "america", or sometimes "the states".
