regular dig cameras don't show your location but if they show the exif crap they can be compared to other photos on the net with the same info, like photos on your facebook account for example.
i don't think a lot of people realize that if one were so inclined, and had access to certain software, they could search the net for matching metadata. they could essentially prove that the pics on your facebook account were taken with the same camera as the pics on this site.
that in itself may not be incriminating, but once the link is made the rest is cake. police only need warrents for searches and arrests. they don't need them to follow leads.
it's not just about smartphones and geotagging.
