DR-80 Grow Tent w/ 400w HPS-MH, Cooling System?

I am thinking about ordering the DR80 Dark Room Grow Room, right?. I currently have a 400w HID system, I've only used it in closet grows. So, I have two questions: 1.) Can the DR80 handle the 400w system. 2.) What would be a good way to cool the tent? Please include something like a diagram, links are helpful too!

THANKS:leaf:

I know that you would probably want a vortex fan at least 400cfm with a controller so if you need the full amount you have it. Also do a cool tube that will keep the inside of the tent cooler as well. Happy growing

guys, this is how I have mine set up, i've got a 6" sun cool II. I have 4" ducting coming from outside running to my 4" ValuLine inline fan and then 6" ducting running to one end of the reflector. I then have 6" ducting running out of the tent. On the bottom I have a 4" ducting exiting out......and one floor fan. My temps are pretty darn cool for now (low 70's by feel, need a new battery for my thermometer)

Im using your exact set up now and Im having a pretty hard time managing the heat. I cool tubed my 400 HPS and I am currently running 3 fans to keep in 81-85 degree range. I run the lights at night to avoid heat and I have been forced to leave the door open to let the fans get to it. The temps sky rocket when I close it. I had to get a perscription to ambien to be able to sleep with a mini sun in my bedroom. SUCKKKSSS

also, I realized I left out part of my cooling description

My reflector has ducting on both sides, both leading OUT of the tent. Comes in -> goes to fan -> goes to reflector -> goes out reflector -> goes outside

I was thinking of opening one side to pull the air inside the tent out and eventually hooking up a carbon filter to that side

I was looking at putting a 600 watt HPS System with a 600 watt metal halide conversion bulb in my DR80 or is that gonna cost to much to cool should i just buy a 400 or 250 watt metal halide conversion bulb instead?

you could use a 600, but i think that might be a little overkill for the limited space. I have 4 plants in mine and they are getting so big I debated taking one out and sending it back to veg. Def LST or even scrog in one of those things.

I have a DR80 with 400 watt HPS and I'm totally having heat issues.

The light has an air cooled hood so for a while I used a cheap 250cfm 6" duct fan as an exhaust vent at the top of the tent. So I had the 250 CFM exhaust on top of the tent, attached with ducting to the air cooled hood of the 400w HPS, which pulled in air from inside the tent. I keep two of the bottom vents open to act as a passive intake. The best I could do was keep the temperature inside the tent 9 degrees higher than the temp outside the tent. Now that it's summertime that's not cuttin it, cus my temps inside the tent are getting up to 85, and the plants are showing stress.

When I would feel the exhaust air coming out it was definitely hot, so the fan was doing what it was supposed to do by venting the light, so I figured the light must just be pumping out a crapload of heat, so I went and bought a 6" inline fan (Vortex knock-off from HTGSupply) rated at 424 CFM. First of all let me say that it's virtually impossible to fit this size fan inside the tent, its huge and the DR80 is not that big at all. I actually bought the 6" fan/carbon filter combo, hoping to get that installed also, but I attempted to put it all in today and had nothing but problems. After three hours of trying every different setup I could I ended up not installing the carbon filter and simply placing the new fan on top of the exhaust vent at the top of the tent (outside the tent).

So I was all excited when I finally put everything back together and I fired up the new fan. Its loud as hell (sounds like a jet) and was sucking some serious air through the light now, so I was hoping when I zipped up the tent the temps would be a lot lower than they were with the small 6" 250cfm duct fan. I was very disappointed, the temps inside the tent were now 7 degress higher than the temp outside the tent. So I spent $220 and three hours cursing to lower my temps by 2 degrees, mad lame. I was actually astonished, because this new fan feels 10 times stronger than the old crappy one.

So I'm not sure now if the DR80 is just too small for a 400 watt light, or if the light I have is just stupid and emits an abnormal amout of heat. I actually bought my light from HTGSupply also, its the 400 watt HPS with air cooled hood (ballast outside the tent).

Somebody hellllppppp

Old thread I know, but I'm in a similar situation trying to get my temps down. Every successive attempt I've made has only increased temps. I'm thinking the problem is the intake--the 400cfm fan can't pull enough air through just being vented by the passive slots. I'm going to try cutting another passive intake for a 6" duct and see if that does the trick.

I have a DR80.. I can use a normal winged reflector at 400watt.. and stay around the 82° mark. I have 1 6' axial fan at the top pulling the heat out of the tent. and a 6'hose drawing in air from outside.
