"Dumb" idea with "smart" pots?

Post Basics: Is it possible to put a smaller smartpot (1 or 3 gal) inside a larger (5 gal) smartpot and fill the remaining surrounding area to use for some companion planting? Or will it negate the benefits of using smartpots to begin with.

Was gonna put some French marigolds inside the smaller pot (supposedly doesn't compete for room) for some fun color and as a part of minor IPM...and then basil and one or two other shallow rooted herbs in that buffer zone between the pots (also for some minor IPM and to use to cook). My main question/concern with this concept is: "does having the pot-inside-pot negate the positive effects the fabric pots have for drainage/aeration/etc?" I would be using plenty of pearlite with a layered combo FFHF/FFOF. Any advice is much appreciated as this would allow me to maximize my space and current supplies tremdously. Only rocking a 2×4 (inside closet style) LED grow tent so space is supremely limited and growing in 5 gal pots doesn't seem in my best interest as a newbie especially. This is bag seed at the moment. These babies don't need to be in a spa, they just need to know they're loved regardless of their origin

I would think planting them all in the same pot would be most beneficial. Plants in the same soil can communicate and share nutrients. I don't think you want a barrier between that. Someone more experienced will probably come along. I'd say you want at least a 7-10 gallon pots with that many companion plants. Good luck!

Sounds pretty. I would plant the tree in the smaller pot, and plant the companions around the sides of the bigger pot. Fabric pots allow the roots to escape the small pot, into the big pot. The roots of the companions would need to be shallow to not effect yield. You'd get more root space by putting a pot on a pot.

I just realized this is for indoor and that you're in a 2x4. Outdoors this sounds cool. Indoors, even as a beginner, you should have two 5 gallons for that space and skip the companion plants.

If you are set on growing other things, look into hanging wall planters. Or do half a room of bud and half with anything else. Whatever your priorities are

Priorities 100% cannabis, rest would be there only to potentially make the grow little easier and to get 2 birds with one stoner. You're 100% heard on the simplify for 1st time. Quite easy to grow herbs/some flowers elsewhere, versus the cannabis not so much (or to have to start over)... I've grown small amounts of basil and marigolds and up to veg on cannabis but didn't have full FULL set of equipment so I stopped before getting to flowering stage. No consistent source of r/o or distilled and there was an unbearable, unsafe level of whitedust from humidifier with my tap. Figured better to restart and correct than have either no humidity (way, way under), not enough airflow to keep humidty, or an unsafe place to run electric equipment since the dust was absolutely wreckinggg all the fans. So it's not my first first, buttt it really is though all things considered... so simple sounds pretty great to me! Thanks!!

I should mention the reason I wanted to do small pots was because I do not have fem seeds and didn't want to end up with two 5 gal males
