DWC my first hydro

This is my first attempt at hydro. I got 5 gallon buckets under T5 lights and will switch to 400 watt HPS when they flower. I started about a month ago but wanted to make sure they weren't going to die before I started a journal.

I started 4 bag seeds and only two sprouted. I think the PH was too high. I was waiting for it to swing down but it never did so last week I put some PH down in there and the plant is doing much better. I think the second one is too messed up to save so planted more seeds last week and they are starting to sprout now.

Ill try to add some pics. Please feel free to comment.

Only six days ago the plant looked like it was ready to die, it was yellow with dried up brown spots, now its dark green and got a bunch of more roots growing out. :)

Looking good. Hydro rocks! All we gotta do is make sure the PH, temps, algae and PPMs are in check and all is golden. I just started using Dyna Gro Liquid Grow in my DWC buckets and it's performed beautifully for me so far.

It's fun to grow all sorts of stuff in hydro, I have bell peppers, tomatoes, beans and all kinds of stuff growing like crazy right now. Hydro is pretty amazing stuff and very simple for even a newb like me.

Its getting bushy now. I can't believe how much faster this is growing than when I used soil. The one I thought was going to die is looking like it will live but I think the growth got seriously stunted. Next time im going to try some nutes with a PH buffer. When I checked on them today it was at about 7.5/8.

So far its easier than I thought it would be and I can't believe how fast its growing. Next spring I might start some if the veggies in hydro to give them a head start. Hopefully they'll transplant without any issues.

Ph is probably the most important thing when growing in hydroponics, ideally you want a PH of 5.6-6.0 this gives you best results. 7.5/8 is too high and will cause some nute lockout in your plants. If you looking for easy to use ferts try the advanced nutes PH perfect line, i prefer the micro, grow and bloom 3 part mix, but they have 2 parts aswell that use the same PH perfect formula. I've herd good things about dyna grow nutes but you have to buffer the solution b4 you add it to your system, but i hear it holds its PH balance well once its buffered.

Im probably going with a 2 or 3 part next time. I got a technaflora recipe for success kit because its got a little bit of every thing and I wasn't sure what id need but I think its too much. The rooting mix seems to be just creating scum and fucking the plants up so I put the 2 good small plants in their own bucket with the veg nutes and put new seeds in straight water.

I've had my best results with, and recommend, the AN 3 part over their 2 part formulas. I used to use TechnaFlora years ago and they were good, though i prefer Advanced Nutes these days. Especially Their rootzone enhancers, Voodoo Juice and Piranha.Though they are some of the most expensive additives AN makes, but you don't use them much during each flowering cycle so 1 liter of either will last me about 8 full flower cycles. You should consider getting a reverse osmosis unit too, while this is not 100% necessary it helps to keep your PH stable over time compared to tap water...plus you never know what dissolved solids are in you local tap water. I got one on ebay for $120, its a counter top model and attaches to your sink's faucet.

I was considering an RO filter but I heared someone saying that it causes more PH problems than regular tap because they put stuff in the tap that helps it hold a consistent PH level and the RO is more sensitive to adjustments. I decided not to get one yet because my tap was only at 40 PPM. hopefully I will get a sink in the grow room soon and can hook up a filter.

I just got my PH meter, calibrated it and compared it to the colored drops. I might be a little color blind because the two seem to be a slightly off. Everything is going well. I took a clone off the big plant and it looks like it will start to root soon. The big one should show sex soon. If its a male I've got a few other seeds popping up and if its female I might just take a few clones ans go with those so everything will be in the same stage of growth.

Im still hoping the big one is female so I can clone it out. I started one clone and its got some really good roots now. Im kind of experimenting on the other other two. Im doing a LST on one and Ive got the other one held down with paper clips to try to mainline it.2013-10-18_17-47-27_729.jpg2013-10-18_17-46-57_749.jpg2013-10-18_17-46-39_555.jpg2013-10-18_17-46-06_899.jpg2013-10-18_17-45-41_93.jpg2013-10-18_17-45-25_943.jpg

Whomever said that has no fn clue. That said, if t=your tap actually is 40 you're golden, BUT, I doubt it. Read up on why water treatment plants add dissolved solids (if there aren't sufficient amounts to begin with)

Thanks for clearing that up. I had a feeling the guy was making shit up because I didn't see anyone else saying it.

Yes, the big one is a female. The one in the phototron started showing white hairs and a few days later I saw some on the big plant. Here's how she looks now, she's fucking huge.
2013-11-01_19-33-59_598.jpg

I pulled some clones and will probably flower her this weekend

The other three are still looking good. I gave up on LSTing because I didn't like how all the leaves were crammed on one side. Its straightened back out but is still really thick with the leaves, this is the one in the back. The one in the front is the one I tried to main line. I don't think I did it exactly right but its close. I should have four main colas and a little one sticking out the side. I was going to clip the fifth one off but the stem was so thick I was afraid the plant wouldn't handle losing it.

The one I tried to LST was a male but the mainlined one is a female and has been on 12the for about two weeks.

Its starting to stretch and show flowers.

And I have a few clones from the big plant that ill probably veg until the big one is done and then they can take its place under the 400 watt.
