DWC root space/plant... ??

Starting to do some research for a DWC i may start next year...

What is the min volume or space i should allow for each plant in the rez if it has its own rez for that plant... Or what is optimal space for unconstrained root growth...

And the other side of the same coin...
How many plants can i fit into a cretan space without them strangling each other... Say in a sog situation not so much in a full grow...

I would, in a full grow or mother situation, most likely go with the first option where the plant would have its own reserved rez for root space...

I use 45L/M air pump with 4 Oxystones in a 2.5g rectangular tote. My root balls are much smaller, I think due to massive air 24/7. Going to try 2G pail next

I use 4 gallon square buckets and they basically run out of room by the end of the grow. I'm trying out some 10 gallon containers this run but they definitely need more airstones. If your a newb, just use 5 gallon buckets.

I see guys trying to flower out lots of plants in a single tote. The plant roots will quickly get tangled together. A single tote is fine fe early vegging and weeding out smaller weaker plants. There are better ways to do a SOG. (Like ebb and flow)

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] This pic is the roots from my ~40" plant in mid-flower. The container is ~ 2g. Air pump is 45 L/M

The root ball is ~ grapefruit size. Why so small? IMO it is due to the roots not getting unnecessarily saturated in mostly standing water/nutes, sort of like if you over cook pasta it swells and looses its' shape

I used anything from 2 gallons to 8 gallons. Naturally the 2 gallon containers had to be for smaller plants, say 2-3 foot, but they grew no different to bigger plants in an 8 gallon, as one would expect.

LMAO. You sure about that? I highly doubt it. Even roots in aero systems get larger than that. Perhaps really high nitrogen nutes? Really cold water? Something, but it isn't the fact that your really aerating them. My roots in my undercurrent system were crazy and I had shit loads of air in there.

Laugh all you want. The pictures don't lie. The plant is very healthy, buds are doubling in size~ every 2 days. I changed nutes this morning, what you see in the pic is accurate. If anything, completely out of the bath, the root ball is smaller than the photo

It is getting a lil heavy and huge! I'm really excited to see its end and what the fuss is about hydro....though I'm already seeing it firsthand. I'm really wondering about my 5 gallon bucket being large enough though because she's really filling it. When I change reservoirs my plastic net pot wants to raise up above the lid due to the rootball under it pushing up. I have to ease her down in or fill it about 80% full.
Be careful not to rip em,looks pretty heavy.

I used to think that way, too, but I have grown 2 different strains from seed with my method and just don't get those swollen bucket clogging roots
