hempys rock. i have an auto feed system for mine. can go away for 2 weeks with no problems.

i use growstones . they hold the most air and water of any medium.

ya man! DTW is the way to go I think. on 3rd run now, first DTW and dig it. same plant count as you, but only a 5g bucket res. trying to get a better idea of feeding schedules folks are running. if you're running hempy at 2 feeds/day, then I'm good with 2 feeds in coco 35% perlite. Thought I might be underfeeding.

for sure! DTW is awesome. i've played around with even more feeds during bloom but found that one an hour after lights on and one in the middle of the day works great.

Love this thread..I started hydro growing in 1981 with a simple top water set up..used very course vermiculite and found it working nicely..it was wet but always let it nearly dry before a rewatering..It grew plants!!...shortly evolved to wick set up, then Hempy...We grew that way but the hempy name came MUCH LATER....definately not a new thing, then drip sys (now called hempy dtw), them ebb and flow table, rockwool, back to drip, and eventually water culture...you name it, I dabbled with them all over the last 36 yrs...NOW, I swapped from water culture BACK to Hempy...each 5gal.bucket (6) has an airstone at the 2 inches of grow rock in the bottom...I am top watering and it is dtw...once roots bottom out, I water down a 2in pvc tube attached vertically inside each bucket..water goes right to the bottom Rez area...the 2in high drain hole plumbed to go to main waste drain tube..I water every 3 days once roots bottom out (every other day and lightly before roots hit bottom)...DWC vegges the fastest but this is a close 2nd....flowering results, as good as dwc, WITH AN AIR STONE...that stone in the base MAKES A DIFFERENCE when ur roots bottom out!!!...we all know how roots love that air..of course a true hempy does not call for it, but its a cheap, easy addition that PAYS OFF...I have not modified to drip, cause I have NP top watering...Once u automate to a drip, it is technically no LONGER Hempy, but is now a dtw drip system...Which is fine and works excellent....That also eliminates the need for an air stone, AND a 2 in high drain hole..if your dripping, no need for that bottom rez...Or, u can keep the 2in hole and set drip to fill every cpl days just long enuf to fill that 2in rez and get a little dtw going...But Hempy allows a lot of modifications to fit anyones need, including keeping it basic Hempy...I highly recommend the air stone addition to a basic hempy for best results...after 36 yrs of growing, Its where I am at!!!...AND NOTHING give better results IMO...pic is 3 strains 15 days into veg...another 3-5 days and I will induce flower..all approx 3x stretchers, and space will fill nicely...I cage them in a cpl more days ....mix is 4:1 perlite to vermiculite..dyna nutes...cant overwater with this...if you do, it just drains off..waste of nutes but dont have to worry if ur new grower...you WILL LEARN how much they use at different stages of growth...regards, YT20170528_165755.jpg

New pic of hempy set up running..15 days of veg...cages go on tmrw..flower in about 5 days...FAST VEGGING now..roots bottomed out to the air stones!!....dwc vegges fastest but this is very close 2nd....flowering results of this cannot be beat...matched, but not beat and thats with dwc....this requires much less work and stress on the grower..lol..too many things can go wrong in dwc..IMO..Certainly not bashing dwc, they grow beautiful plants...not my thing any more...REGARDS,YT20170528_165755.jpg

I realize this is an ancient thread but posting this because after close to 37 yrs of hydro growing, I am going back to a modified hempy...I have evolved over the decades using drips, ebb and flow, rockwool, Dwc, and all of it turned into a system I call an swc (shallow water culture)...same as a dwc but in a large shallow res holding multiple plants....I am just tired of chillers, pumps, cleanup, and the additional time for yields I can achieve with a modified hempy...modified in that I will run an airstone in each of (6) 5gal buckets...the bottom 3 inches will have ECA medium topped with 4:1 perlite:vermiculite mix....Iike that 20% vermiculite cause it holds water a little better before the roots bottom out...2 inch over flow is tubed to a single waste tray....I also did this before WITHOUT the airstones and they rocked...My 'ace in the hole' with a hempy set up, IS MY DECADES of growing...I can read my plants like no other...A well tuned hempy with an airstone in the bottom with yield just as good as ANY OTHER SYSTEM...A DWC will outgrow it in veg but your just splitting hairs at that point...the ease of use, less time, less equipment, makes hempy systems a viable choice, EVEN AFTER decades of growing...some of you will recognize my user name and have seen MANY pics that testify to my knowledge...I will certainly post more....the first round will be 2 Incredible Bulks, 2 White Widow extrm, and 2 Cheese Candy's....1000w of light on a mover, Dyna nutes, and a simple 5gal fizz pot for extra CO2...space is ~ 5ft by 4ft...perfect for the 1000w....Too many ppl are easily HEARDED by the industry saying u need this and that to grow quality plants...THEY MAKE MILLIONS and hope to keep everyone buying the latest and greatest...HEMPY systems are not for just beginners, they are for ANYONE who wants a garden that ROCKS WITHOUT spending a bunch and doing all the extra work...BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, AND GOT THE T-SHIRT....this works as good as ANY...Regards, YT...quick pic of a White Widow bud from last weeks harvest...View attachment 3939765
I have a pic of where I am at setting up my hempy grow...the vertical tube.in ths bucket is for the air line and watering once the roots bottom out...till then, I just top water...threw one bucket in there for picture purpose..of couse they are elevated for proper drainage..there will be 3 buckets on each side....earlier I mentioned being able to read my plants well...with a hempy that is very important...with a water culture, all someone has to do is measure your ppms when u feed and check after a full cycle...it the numbers are higher your over feeding, if they are lower, your under feeding and if they are about the same, your spot on...in other words, monitoring your res tells u EXACTLY what your plants are feeding on..with a hempy, you MUST RELY on the plants reactions...

20170523_123635-1.jpg 20170603_160449.jpg Another pic...now 2 days into flower...topped twice and running on 480ppms of grow formula...these went Exactly 3 weeks of veg before inducing flower....they will stay on grow thru heavy stretch...switch to flower formula about 8-10 days in...I like that extra nitrogen the grow formula supplies during heavy stretch...regards, YT....I have a line up of Bomb seeds going into the next crop....this current one has 2 white widow extrm plants, 2 Incredible bulks, and 2 cheese candy (aka delicious candy)....they have ALL served me well!!!!...I have been wanting to give Bomb seeds a try...especially THC Bomb....So, I will soon be cracking those....and yes, I bought both feminized and regular..looking for a specific pheno an aquaintance has, and I have a better chance finding it with some of each...L8'r
