I think it has less to do with 'what the best system is' and more to do with what fits your circumstance. I am working on a soiless grow (Promix/Perelite), and it works great for me because:
* Less attractive to bugs than straight soil, since the nutes are only added as needed; also more control over nutrient uptake than soil
* More convenient than DWC because I grow in the basement, and draining the rez would be a pain
* Minimizes maintenance-- can go several days without watering or even checking in on the plants... a week if I hook up the Oasis waterer
* I can unplug the cabinets when guests are over to keep the grow private without worrying about the impact on the plants
* Maximizes the odd-sized cabinets I use for the grow
* It's very cheap to operate ( I even use the liquid ph testing instead of getting an expensive EC/Ph meter)
* It minimizes the visits to the hydro store
I also grow more than I ever need for myself, so pushing yeilds to the limit has no value to me.
To get better guidance, I would state your current circumstance, experience, budget and goals.
