Maybe get an e-scooter.

I need something that has paniers and can carry a couple bags of groceries or a change of clothes

That's the biggest problem with electric motorcycles in general, the limited range.

Don't forget about the Zero. It's more road than dirt oriented though.

Looks like there's another new electric motorcycle on the market from CSC, the same guys who brought cheap Chinese dual sport and adventure bikes to the market. It's supposed to have a 112-mi range, and top speed of 80mph. The 0-60 time of 9 seconds isn't super quick though.

Those are both cool, but those are full fledged motorcycles. What I meant by “big boy bikes” is that Onyx and SurRon can still sorta use bikes lanes and bike paths, even though they’re technically mopeds, and not ebikes. But they sorta slide into ebike territory to those who don’t know better, where as the CSC and the Zero are undeniably motorcycles.

That's true to a point, since the CSC and Zero can get plates, however you couldn't legally classify a Sur Ron as a moped (at least not here in Cali). Riding those bikes on the road around here risks impoundment.

Well, I ride with a large group in Los Angeles, we have dozens of SurRon and Onyx bikes in the group. So far, no one has gotten impounded. Technically, yes, they’re off road only. But for now, we’re all getting a huge pass from the cops, who are generally more curious than anything else.

For now, you've been lucky..

Yeah, I’ve met Dillon(the guy who made and posted that video) a few times. I’m pretty sure they just got tickets, not impounded. Dillon occasionally uses clickbait titles, but when questioned in the comments section about whether or not they got ticketed or impounded, Dillon went quiet on it.

Not saying that cops don’t occasionally impound bikes, I just don’t have any firsthand knowledge of it happening here, and I’ve been riding with that group for a while. The same group in the video. And a couple other large groups in the LA area.

I’ve been on a LOT of large group rides where we see all kinds of cops, and we have never been stopped or harassed on any of the dozens of rides I’ve been on. Again, not saying it doesn’t happen, I just haven’t seen it.

But I dunno if a CSC bike or Zero would fit in with those groups, lol. Thats the only real distinction I was trying to make in the first place.

Yeah, all totally fair points.

I'm up in Santa Cruz, and there's this one guy I've seen who has what I think is a Sur Ron (or some other really fast "e-bike"). I've seen him passing cars on the right and blowing through red lights in the areas that they have traffic cams. I guess he figures that with no plate, they won't catch up to him later. I'd love to get one myself, but I couldn't ride it legally hardly anywhere around here.

I have on loan a 26" 500w 48v hub motor bike, has 110 kms on it.First test run using mostly the motor I got about 1% of battery per 1 minute of use.A mix of hills, gravel, grass and pavement.Pedal to get going but straight motor after that.I went for 25 minutes, distance was 7kms I used 25% of the battery.I weigh 245lbs.

Seams about right, trip had a lot of starts and stops.Front shock seals are leaking and the rear brake made noise.Bike is called a Surface 604.https://www.surface604bikes.ca/products/2022-shred

edit to add,I think this one has 14amp/hr battery.Cant see anything written and dont have key to remove.

So finished off the battery this evening. Total about 17 kms. Getting home didn’t have much assist at all battery showed 18%. Not enough power for this 245 lb guy.
I see dual motor bikes starting to come around. Dual batteries also.
