Hello Everyone! This is my first post ever! I have been an advid reader for the past few weeks and started my first grow (first time I grew anything from seed) about 5 weeks ago today.
Ok, Here are my stats:
1. Started from seed on 1/17 from some good quality/strong bagseed I had bought about eight years ago (stored in freezer).
2. I germinated 4 seeds using a paper towel/back of TV method and 3 showed roots.
3. I potted these seeds (including the one that didn't show a tap root/wishful thinking) in their own 16oz styrofoam coffee cup using the Walmart brand (Expert Gardener) of soil. I labeled these cups by the length of their tap roots (1 had the longest tap root, 4 was the seed that didn't show a tap root before planted). I put them under 1 150wt flor. light (6400 Lum.) for 24 hours a day.
4. 1, 2 and 4 broke soil. 3 never appeared. At two weeks, I replanted them with the same soil in 2 gal. pots. I put them under a 400Wt MH light for 16/8.
5. My tallest (#2) is about 15 inches and my smallest (#4) is about 8 inches. My total growing ht is about 37 inches after I minus about 1 1/2 feet for the light and 12 inches for the pots. Yesterday, I switched the light to a 400Wt HPS for 12/12.
This brings me to today:
The plants look really healthy - but I am guessing that they are Sativas because I see no alternating leaves yet and only a few preflower pistules starting on the upper nodes (I think past node 5) so I still have no clue of their sex. They do have nine leaves on the top on all three plants. I was wondering if this was too early to start flowering a Sativa (if this is a Sativa)?
Since this is my first grow, I am taking it all in as a learning experience. I haven't found anything specific as to telling how to distinguish the maturity of a Sativa, so I figured I would ask the experts and share my experience so far.
Thanks for any advice in advance! I haven't used any nutes this far - I do have some Schultz 10-15-10, but I am not sure if they need any yet. I would almost rather not add anything if they are already healthy. But I am open to suggestions.
I think the best advice I received on this site so far was to go ahead and spring for a MH/HPS light instead of trying to guess with CFL - it made things kinda foolproof, which works best for me . I think it was worth the money. I got mine on eBay from HTGSupplies.
I was expecting them to 'stink' alot during flowering - but they started about two weeks ago (third week of veg). I have a small desktop ion generator in the growing area now and an air purifier just outside - but they aren't working too well...
I know I just asked a whole bunch of things - but the main question is was this too early to flower a Sativa? What effect would this have? But any advice and comments are welcome!!
The first two pictures are from when they were 2 weeks old and the third is at 5 weeks (yesterday) before they went into flower :
