Over the summer i am going to be gone for two months. I was thinking i could maybe use something along the lines of the Earthtrainer to water them. http://earthtainer.tomatofest.com/. Will it give it enough water for two months, i could probably modify it to have more water. Anyways, anyone knows in general, weather this would last for two months or would it suck up the water to fast.

You may consider getting a 55 gallon drum to collect rain water, install a 1/2" outlet on the bottom and then make a dri-p system that goes to each plant. just have the lines supply a small amount of water to each plant.

The barrel would get refilled by rain. also depending on how many plants you have, you could add barrels.

the area i live in doesn't get that much water. any idea by any chance about how any gallons of water a plant would take for two months. The earthtrainer seemed like a good idea because there is no water loss.

they make barrels specifically for collecting rain water, the top is recessed with a hol in the lower part to let the water into the barrel, this will keep light and debree from getting into the barrel. also you would want to put mosquito dunks in the barrel to kill the pecker gnats that will lay eggs in the water, i believe a dunk would last for a couple months, the are time release.
I have a few barrels on habd, wanna borrow them for the summer :))

haha thanks for the offer. Like i said though my area doesn't get much rain. Last year 0.05 inches for the months i will be gone for. Anyways, you think if i make the Earthtrainer with two plants in each there will be enough water?

im pretty sure that system would last two months leaving your roots to dry out and plants dieing.better off with a drip.50 gal system would be your best thing.

Quoted from earthtrainer site:
When I saw his EarthTainer design I responded immediately with enthusiasm. One of its primary merits is that the EarthTainer holds 10 gallons of water and can go several days before needing replenishment.

so no, your gonna need about 100 gallons on a slow drip, and hope for a couple rain showers.

i'd go with one or two. set it to drip a gallon a day. so youll get about 55 days, but i would think youd get at least one rain shower in a couple months, whixh would replenish the barrel some.

A hearty plant is gonna consume a gallon a day easily. so if you could get 1 barrel per plant you may get bt with it. ive racked my brain and this is the only thing i could think of that may work, but mother nature could make or break it

Maybe i'm looking at this the wrong way, but my logic is the earthtrainer will probably conserve water pretty well. Using a 30 gallon tub i could probably create a resevoir of about 10 gallons. Would that not be enough for two months?

the earth trainer is a wick hydro/dwc. it may use the water efficiently, but the thing is most of the water lost is form the plant transpiring (sweating), which you cant control, the water evapporates off the undersides of the leaves.

If you want any help designing a barrel setup hit me up, even if you got one good shower over the 2 months you can setup a collection tarp that collects water over a wide area and drains into the barrell.

the 55 gallon drum just may be able to get the plant thru the 2 months alone.

anyway, im rambling on, saw this post a couple days ago and this is my idea.

peace out and goodluck!!:leaf::leaf::leaf:
