I picked up a silver surfer off of ebay - a very good decision as I love that thing. I think, shit where's my beer - Damn, stoned again. Ahhhhhhhhh.

Not enough info to really tell you, could be any vaporizer and they all vary in quality. I am not a fan of vaporizers myself but if I was I would make sure to try and get it from a reputable person on ebay due to the fact it will eventually be used to put something in my body.

I spent a lot of time researching because I didn't want to spend so much. But I learned the cheap ones don't last, poor components. I ended up buying a Buddha which is basically the silver surfer without some frills. 3 year warranty. $159. gotvape.com

I'm debating weather or not to buy one and I have never used one either, but the folks that use them say they love em'.

I doubt the $50 vapes are worth dealing with. Most want the heating element and nearby attachment assemblies to be clear from harmful emissions. They make ceramic encased heating elements that don't touch glass parts that end up vaporizing your herb. I like seeing blurbs like glass-on-glass, and ceramic/glass coated heater element, etc. Also, there are two main things that control the temp of your load, and I think it's wise to carefully consider both. (1)The entire heating system, and (2)the user controlled amount of relatively cold incoming air. It's commonly said that digital heater control is better than analogue, and most seem to like the option of filling collection bags if they so desire.

Anyone tried the following yet? Not sure it's feasible, but to me it sounds like a good idea.

How about (1)starting off with a half decent looking, not bulky, economical and safe heating element vaporizer. Then (2)carefully modify it to accept some forced air from (3)a fish tank style pump or PC type blower fan for "powered shotgun" or "power assist" mode. With (a)enough air pressure and (b)hot enough heating element, you could even fill collection bags!!! It would be awesome turning 150 bucks worth, into something that most charge 300 and 400+!

I believe that by including some variable speed forced air, you get two benefits.
-More reliable and efficient vapor flow produces more consistent and controlled vapes
-Vapor party bags! DIY standard/giant economical (clear trashcan) capture bags

A controlled air flow would certainly be possible with an airpump and some valves. You could even measure it and dial up the psi you wanted. But I lost you on the 150 to 300 or 400 part?

brother got a $50 digi one. It seemed to work great at first, now it works, but sometimes it gets the herb to hot and burns it up even with low temp settings.

It was the idea of modifying something cheaper (100-150), into something more valuable(300-670). Most vaporizers with forced air start around 300. The suggestion is to get an inexpensive one and make nicer like the more expensive ones.

Another idea is to buy a ground glass vaporizer bowl/whip like from gotvape,

http://www.gotvape.com/store/vapor.whips.php

then carefully add your own heat source and your good to go. Here's a link to a youtube vid showing how this might work with a bong included.

He takes 6 hits from a modest sized bowl. And when he puts it away for later, it isn't but about half spent! Burning that much in a pipe should produce about 3-4 hits, but with the vape it's about 10-11 rips, or 2.5 times more vapor than smoke! And the vapor is healthier and better smelling, love vaporizing.

Thanks for the report. Do you think the unit is defective? You may have a clogged screen. Also, it helps to turn/rotate your herbs after each rip that way the parts by the hot screen don't dry up too quickly and become prone to catching fire. I know that might sound like a hassle, but it helps. I've even seen some have a cyclone bowl where the herb floats up and around when you rip on it.

Here's a cool vid demo'ing a vape in action and stirring the bowl. Very low priced unit, yet very effective!

The lows don't have much thc oils, so it dries up quicker and thus is quicker to catch fire. On the flip side tho, if your stuck with some dirt weed, then load that stuff in the vaporizer, much better than smoking harsh stuff. You wont get as much vapor as high quality stuff because there's simply less essential oils in the first place. Then again, you wont be coughing your head off either.

Yeah', I love the vaporizer when I got schwag buds. Like you said, it isnt as harsh. I dont mind risking it if it burns up. But when I got quality nuggs I am a little more hesitant to use it.

I dont think it is defective. I have learned to not pack big bowls, they cause it to burn up faster. Too little of bud and it wont stay against the screen and wont vaporize well... Too much bud and it burns up.

That guy in the second vid uses a heat-gun. I have heard of doing this. But I dunno' about running your vapor through a bong. You would lose some of your vapor in the water.

I appreciate your response. I bet if you got a solid trusty vaporizer, you might lean that way more often, but I agree that v-ripping is great for taking the harsh out of weed that smokes harsh!

Maybe a replacement whip/bowel would vape better/easier. I fully agree about the water bong issue. But I would run it through a dry bong in a heartbeat, that's what I usually do. Bongs work great adapting to vaporizing because for such little cash outlay, you get a great vape rig.

However, with the loose heat gun, safety is a serious issue! I strongly recommend finding a way to permanently shield off the hot area.

I already have a heat gun. Although I'd prefer a digital one with ceramic/glass coated element. I need to buy a new whip bowel assembly! Also I'd like to mount the heat gun so it stays in a safe place, and then I'll be vapen.

Also for bargain basement prices, I've seen vapes on ebay for 125 and 150 that include fan power assist, which I think is great. Just add an external booster fan and you might be able to fill collection bags!

i you're inclined to 'do it yourself', there is a real good plan for a halogen bulb base vaporizer over in the DIY forum
never used these high priced beasts i see talked about here, but i found the halogen bulb vaporizer to be an excellent performer
and when you build it yourself, you know what's in it, you can make it 'super healthy'
