Electricity Bill Sky rocketed

Thanks for the replies everyone

I would have to agree that it is probably the AC in your house that is causing the rise in electricity costs.

If you want to add up your grow running costs you only need a few minutes to check.

You can do this with 1 of your roomates who obviously know you are growing so that you have a witness.

First you start with taking the wattages from all your equipment that includes

Lighting
fans
Reservoir
or anything else that you have running in your grow op.

Then you multiply the amount of each of the items wattages by the number of hours that it runs for.

So for instance if you use a 400w light then this uses around 400watts of electricity per hour, you then multiply this amount by the number of hours you have it running.
18 x 400 = 7200w this is 7.2Kwh per day
Fans
100w x 24 (if you have your fans running constantly) = 2400w this is 2.4kwh per day

Now add all your kwh together to get the total running amount of kwh per day for your grow 9.6Kwh

Then you multiply this number by the amount you pay for electricity, in this case i will use 0.09 (GBP)
total daily running cost of 0.864 (GBP) this is definately not alot of money per day. Then you multiply this by the amount of days the bill you have received covers. This will work out your Billing amount extra per bill for your grow room.

If you have trouble working it all out drop another message on here with
1. Amount paid per Kwh
2. Amount of Watts used per day

With this information i can tell you how much of that bill you have to pay for your grow op.

I am going to do this

a 50 inch plasma uses more power then a 600w hps
i wouldnt be terribly suprised if your new comp uses more power then your grow setup

Id say the AC, water heater, and fridge take up the majority of elec. in any house.
You could get the kill-a-watt tester and use it to figure out the rest of your room-mates' electric usage.
Replace every bulb in your house with 13w cfls to start. Most appliances will suck elec from the wall even if turned off, so its not fair to blame the grow gear.

I already suggested replacing our 100watt shitty bulbs with cfls.... but the owner "likes" the way they are. But I will test the wattage of everyone to have prove that I am not using so much electricity

Honestly man a gaming pc with a 600 watt psu if gaming all the time with a modern GPU can use about 300-500 watts. I have a 1000 watt psu in my gaming rig, but when gaming uses only about 600 and when at idle only about 250. My gpu alone uses 400-450 watts and its only a gtx260. If your running higher end then easily 600 and lower end probably around 300. Honestly id stay off the gaming for a bit. I stopped playing Modern Warfare 2 for awhile and my bill dropped about 50-60 bux now I havent played in a very long time and my bill stays under 250 with everything running at regular times. And i also agree with the above post AC's, water heaters, and refigerators use the most electricty, and u can adjust all of them for less power consumption if u know how. My grow only jumps the bill about 30-40 dollars and it is a 400 watt hps.

Im going to assume your electric rate is average at around 14 cents per KWH. Your grow light of 75 watts is left on for 16 hours a day for one month (30 days). 75w x 16hours= 1,200 watts or 1.2 KWH. 1.2 KWH costs 1.2 x .14=.168 or 17 cents rounded per day to run. 17 cents x 30 days =$5.10 additional energy usage. Your PC if left on all day at low power and full power 8 hours a day would consume( (150 x16) + (600 x 8 ) = 7.2 KWH/day or 7.2 x .14 =$1.08 added together that is about $35.34 to run both light and PC. Must be something else causing the spike in power usage, Air Conditioner a likely culprit
