taowolf, good work. can you link me to the source? id like to read for a while on the subject.

its so funny how with most topics, if you get your info from here and then read an actual article from a scientist or botanist, you get different theories and answers. theres alot of wives tales and misinformation in our community.

Taowolf, this link has the same basic stuff in it. I guess I should have put the link in when I chimed in before, this is a very good link on plant biology from Ohio State. Can be a little long in the tooth in areas but a good read.

Edit: I bet this would be a good time to also flavor or color your bud if you wanted to. I am not sure what coloring would do to flavor though. Maybe I'll guinea pig it by coloring a small branch getting close to finishing.

thank you for you simple answer plants take up water there stem. no different than placing fresh cut flowers in vase with water....i guess because it isnt written in the book it isnt true...some people i swear just say some shit and dont even know the answer.....yes yes yes a plant will suck up water with its stems.

i should have known this because i OFTEN take cuttings and place them in water for a week or more till im ready for them. they always stay healthy.

i don't feel stupid because what i'm saying is true. a big plant cannot pull up enough water to sustain itself, cuttings can. and they DO perspire (lose water) through their leaves.

What kind of childhood did you all grow up in?

Ever buy flowers from the flower shop? You put them in WATER numbnuts. It's because they stay healthier, longer. They also give you a packet that you put in the vase that is full of NUTRIENTS.

Plants 101.. knew that since I was 4.

ANYWAY, the original idea behind this thread was brilliant. Has anyone tried it?

now your just trying to insult me. i believe so strongly that this method doesn't work that i'll hang around some more to throw dirt on the idea. see how long you fully developed weed plants can survive if you cut the roots off.

My flowers came with a packet of powdery stuff. Is this a Good Thing? Yes. The packet contains a commercial preservative that will substantially increase the "vase-life" of your cut flowers. It's a complex combination of sugar, acidifiers (to prevent growth of microorganisms), and respiratory inhibitors. Because most tap water is alkaline in nature, an acidifying agent transforms the pH of your flower's water to a more hospitable acidic nature, which is closer to that of plant sap. It's really best to use distilled or denatured water and a commercially prepared mix; most professional florists agree that homemade water treatments (including adding crushed asprin, pennies, or wine to the water) are ineffective. If your bundle of blossoms didn't come with a packet, any supermarket florist will sell or give you a packet or two. If you absolutely can't get out of the house, you might try the following mix, but it won't be as effective as a commercial preparation.

forget about the nutrients for a sec. you got so hung up on them that you probably scoured the internet for your cut-and-paste rebuttal that simply focused on the packet of nutrients that I felt was an afterthought

think about the fact that putting a cut flower in a vase full of water makes it last quite a while longer than no water at all.

you basically slowly modify your stance on the subject as people counter you with actual knowledge. first you said nothing without roots can take up water... now you're saying only small cuttings can take up water without roots...

what's next? plants can live fully functionally without a root system and have yields greater than we've ever imagined?

i scoured the internet for all of 25 seconds to show you that your excellent knowledge of the workings of plants isn't really that excellent, and you wrote nutrients caps too because you seemed so sure of it.

i don't come on here to argue with people and try and insult them, i want to offer advice and give my opinion. plants might survive slightly longer when placed in water, and cuttings can certainly survive in water.

but you can't "flush" plants this way because they will not pull up enough water through capillary action alone.
if you put water into your soil/coco and the plant has roots, it will consume a lot more water than just placing the stem in water.

all plants can uptake some water without roots, a big one can't take on enough to sustain it though.

p.s go and grow some weed

calling someone's idea bullshit is insulting.

do me a favor, and you can do this with any plants. cut of two identical pieces of plant, or two plants of the same size. put one in water, let one sit on the table. one will dry the fuck out, one will live for roughly a week longer. plain and simple.

regardless of whether an entire plant could pull up all the water necessary is inconsequential, just simply cut a plant down into individuals stems or nodes.. much like your avatar, and put those in a bucket of water.

you wouldn't know the first thing about growing a plant if you weren't given things like rooting hormone and the advice of people who peruse these forums. if it were up to people like you posting constantly all the time no one would know shit.

The book is "Asking About Life" by Allan J. Tobin (UCLA) and Jennie Dusheck (Santa Cruz, CA) and that info is in chapter 31 "How do plants move water and sugars?". It's a great book if you find anything about biology/ecology/botany interesting in the least.

the original idea will not work, thats is why i said it is bs, try it and see for yourself.

the person who started this thread was asking advice (he didn't say this idea worked) and i gave him mine. now we are arguing between ourselves and i hate it, i won't post again on this thread and i would once again like to apologise to the original poster for walking all over your thread.

like i said in an earlier post, i am only here to learn and give advice where i can, i felt strongly that this idea will not work so i gave my two cents. i am an easy going guy but you really get to me and i hope to not come across you in the future.

to everybody else good luck with the growing.

Sorry to get so heated though, I just think you're wrong in principle about the whole thing. And you definetely have never tried it. which is why I can't understand the strength of your conviction that it won't work.

but anyway has ANYONE tried this?

dont worry about thread jacking... im glad i got some peoples views on this, esp since on the other threads everyone was saying how awesome of an idea it was...i like a good debate because it makes people think outside of the box and forces research...i am looking for info so i can get into this debate also ;)
