if rockwool isn't working for you, try peat pellets or rapid rooters. But there is no reason you should be having a problem with rockwool.

I have a package of Hydrofarm starter pellets.

I wnat to stick with rockwool, since Ive had it work in the past.

Will it be OK on the shelf, 45 inches from the 400w HPS light in my tent? that would be until I saw the roots and trnaferred into the hydrotron.

36 inches would be fine, if they start to stretch, move them closer.

In your experience have you seen seedlings die from overwatering just from being in the net pot?

I have about 2 inches of hydrotron between the bottom of the rockwool and bottom of the pot.

Im going to raise the rockwool in a container and have it 36 inches away.

until my roots are full and thriving i have my water busting hitting the bottom of my rockwook, but these are not seedlings , they have a good deal of roots. then i lower the water level.

I've starved seedlings to see what happened. In a dark environment with minimal water (about a teaspoon per day added to rockwool) four out of four germed seeds (barely cracked might I add) sprouted. It took from 3-10 days for all of them to sprout. GL

OK. I use the general Hybdrponics nutes. they say 440 PPM in seedling.

This last time I put the rockwool in PH water and 25% (440PPM) nutes. That didnt work. last time I grew I didnt use any nutes in seedling.
I also use GH series. I wouldn't use any nutes on the Rockwool. Just something with B1 vitamin like SuperThrive but 1/2 strength max. Grow it for a couple weeks or until established then drop it in your hydro set up with hydroton. Now you can begin adding nutes. Again, keep the water level touching the pots until roots start poking through the nets at 400-450 ppm. Once you see the roots hanging out, drop the water level to 3 inches below the nets and bump the nutes up to 600-650. You don't need any more than that until flower.

What I'm doing right now with my seedlings is I put about 2 inches of hydroton pellets in the bottom of a party cup and put the rockwool on top of it. If I overwater a bit then it runs through and moistens the pellets, nothing wrong there. Prevents overwatering and gives the roots something to anchor to. Only been 2 days and I already have 2/6 seedlings with 2 inches of taproot coming out of the bottom of the rockwool. The other 4 are green and should catch up quickly.

Just soak small cubes in 5.5-5.6 water for half an hour, shake them out, put cracked seed in the hole, put cube in a cup or whatever holds them, cover with saran wrap or a dome until green leaves emerge, unwrap and begin the light cycle. I think this method is rather simple and effective.
