fan speed control

I have a fan that is too loud because it is running to fast is there some kind of dimmer switch for fans so you can run them at the speed you need them to run. The fan I have is a cpu style fan but its not for a cpu its a old mini air hockey table fan and it makes a vortec sound when running so i need to slow the fan down but dont know how. THis fan plugs in with a normal plug and wire just like most appliances. This fan doesnt hook to a phone charger it uses the same chord a tv would use to plug in which Ive never seen before with this style fan. Anyway advise please +rep to all who advise.

I wired in a regular light dimmer switch into mine and it works great. They are less than $5 at HD.

Harbor Freight sells a router speed control that is the exact same as the fan speed controlers sold at hydro stores...just less $$$.

From the info I have found on the net wiring a dimmer switch to a fan can be dangerous and will burn out the fan quickly.
