First of all. Test the soil you are going to use. (a cheap little NPK kit - will do just fine). You can get them at most hardware, or garden stores. If, any of the most basic of nutrients NPK are weak, add a soil amendment to boost them up. Remember, organic amendments take time to kick in. Give them a few days to settle in; then plant. Worm Castings are excellant for starting plants - they have weak N .1 %, but it is very easy for plants to absorb. Plus worm castings have beneficial microorganisms (nature's little soil improvers) that will break every nutrient present down to its most useable size. Now, some would say use chemical fertilizers - they kick in fast. Yes the do, and they leave quick too. I DO NOT LIKE THEM. Grow Organic - Plain water is fine to start, as long as, the soil you are going to use has at least the basics. If not, amend or you will surely fail. Possible amendments: Worm Castings (good starter N no P - K) mix in about 10 percent volume, blood meal (good N - fast acting - use lightly) follow instructions on package. Alfalfa pellets (cheap & available at the feedstore - NPK 2-1-2 / a feed for mister bunny rabbit) pound them to dust, in a old sock with a hammer & blend in. Alfalfa also contains a natural plant growth stimulant (bonus
). A cup of alfalfa dust to a gallon of soil. Plus, please do not use water with chlorine in it -
it spells death to your benifical microorganisms. If you only have water from the tap - let it sit in a open container for 2 days, 99 percent of the chlorine will evaporate. Hope some of this helps....
