Fill Your Pots Up

Just a quick one about filling your pots when growing outdoors. Don’t leave 3-4 inches at the top like I did. Unlike indoor growing, the sun will always be at an angle. When your plants are tiny, they’ll be shaded by the edge of the pot. Seems simple enough and common sense for some, but I was so wrapped up in researching growing mediums and nutes I overlooked this! Two parts to that answer: Habit with all my other plants (ornamental, tomato’s, hanging pots) of leaving room for watering — when you leave a bit of room you can fill it up with water and move on. It slowly absorbs on its own…saves me from standing around. Second part was reading that 3 gallons was the optimal size for autos, so I filled them less. Seems so idiotic to me now, 5 is fine. It’s from being a noob and over worrying about all the advice. Now that I’ve calmed down I kind of laugh.

My 2 centavos

First …. I would get them off ( grass / ground ) - perfect access for pest issues / soggy bottoms.

Second - Dark containers absorb heat and probably will need ( complete ) watering - not just “ water and run “. That medium will become hydrophobic faster than you think by not fully saturating . Yes it’s a pain in ass but - let’s say you have plants on risers , you can use a simple watering wand ( shower setting ) attached to hose . As far as sun , they might be ok for direct sun but you can always harden them off first with partial sun until they begin to acclimate. There is still good exposure even on overcast days.

This would take care of the soggy bottom but not all pests. Maybe more of a riser with actual legs?
