First attempted grow room. 5 weeks old.

Hey guys. Really happy I found this site to help me along the way. This is my very first attempt. I just had bag seed that I started to see the process. As of now I have 8 plants that were all started outside for the first month. A week ago I got my 1000W MH/HPS in the mail and they've been under that since. Wednesday I transplanted all of them from a 1 gallon pot to 5 gallon pales. I wanted everyone's opinion on them, and also whether I should top them, or anything else like that. Just looking to get the best yield, which is why I decided on the 1000W. Usually I will do 4 or 5 plants and make sure they're females, but I'm glad I have the 8 because at least half will probably be males, so I'm hoping to end with 4 here. My next time I will be buying some seeds from either Herbies or Attitude. They're doing pretty good. the tallest is about 13" down to about 8 or 9 for the rest. Although there is one that was having some trouble. He was a mutant for a long time, and I didn't even think it was a weed plant at first. lol. It had a ton of miscellaneous leaves all bunched at the bottom, and wasn't really growing. I decided to clip all those off and it's started growing right since then. That one's only about 6" though and will take some time. I was wondering if I should try topping them, or if there's another good technique. I'm looking for maximum yield. Hell, I'd just assume grow a single plant if I got the yield I was looking for, but I'll likely try to get more than I need so that I won't have to continuously keep lights going. Anyway, take a look and let me know what you think. They are all looking a nice dark green color, except 2 of them (2 of the biggest ones) are a little bit lighter than the rest. They don't look unhealthy or anything, just a shade lighter. Could just be a different strand as they were all seeds I collected over the years. Some mid, but mostly reg. Like I said, growing as of last week with a 1000W in soil. I've used soil and water so far. lol. I have a good fan, ducting and some other things coming soon and I'm looking into some nutrients, but may just keep this one with only water unless something goes wrong. I figure it will give me a good control, and anything I do going forward I can see the actual improvements of adding things. I'm thinking of letting them veg for another 3-4 weeks before flowering, but i'm definitely open to ideas.

P.S. How much do you think is a realistic yield assuming 3 or 4 ladies? The closet is 3x3 and 5' tall, but I will be removing the shelf which will make it 7'tall.

Yes, like I said, they were started outside and there were quite a few rainy days when they got next to no light. Some of them were burried too low and when I opened the dirt they were trapped so I freed them and planted. So they're behind, but they've all started growing really good in the past week since I got the light. I had planned to start earlier, and then didn't have the money after car troubles. I ended up just throwing some seed I had in dirt, and some of them were too low and couldn't poke through until I freed them. I would have just given up, but I figured that whatever I got would be better than nothing and I'd get to see the process before starting with good seeds.

be sure to take into account that the plants will at least double in height when put in flower unless you top it, you dont want to grow into the lights. hey groright they look great for 5 weeks, i have a little t5 that does em right also at veg

Soil? You need peat, perlite, vermiculite, looks like you may have some fine perlite? Looks dark? What's the mix? What kind? Cheers!

I keep asking this, but no one is answering. What's the benefit of topping? What does it do? Can anyone give me a quick rundown of that please?

Meh, 1000W, 2 - 4 oz. per plant and yes topping would be beneficial for sure since the 1000W will be overkill.

I actually just topped them a little while ago, so hopefully I did it right. I know the 1000W is overkill, but I got a good deal on it, and I figured that the extra amount it costs in electricity should get made up in bud. So I'm alright with the trade off. Honestly a 600 probably would have been perfectly fine for what I'm doing, and maybe even the 400, but It's ok. I got the 1000W and it has a dimmable ballast, so I can still turn it down to 50% if I want. I'd rather be the guy growing with too big a light than someone trying to grow plants with a regular light bulb. lol. With everything I've read, the heat is the issue with it, and I'm not too worried about it. I'm pretty sure I can make the heat issue work. Winter won't be difficult. Summer will be a littler harder, but I have a AC I can use in the room too, so I don't envision it being too big of a problem. At least not anything I can't work around.

I just mean it is overkill for this very first grow, once you get some females and can run a higher number of plants the 1000W will serve its purpose perfectly.

Yes they wouldve been bigger if started inside but the look great though, very healthy looking!

Thanks. They are coming along nicely. I just topped them tonight, so I'll be interested to see how that goes. I watched video's, but it was my first time, so not sure if I did it right. Pretty sure I did, but IDK. We shall see. I got my nutrients on order now, and will be coming soon.

It is already growing off into two... the terminal cola or top internode has a hormonal inhibitor in it called auxin, which prevent all other branches from reaching above it. By removing the terminal cola you remove the inhibition caused by the auxin. This allows for the other branches of the plant to grow to whatever height they like. In general this practice will result in the two branches directly below the terminal internode to grow to the same height resulting in two smaller top colas in exchange for 1 large cola. This process can be repeated to get four and so on. Keep in mind you are reducing the size of the terminal cola(s) each time and are also stunting the growth of the plant for a short period. It is important to not remove the top cola immediately before budding since the auxin is highly responsible for signaling the bloom period to the plant. Topping and to some extent pruning before switching to 12/12 will increase time until harvest by 1-2 weeks.

The books say one month. I personally do it one month before if I am growing a canopy, but I just grow trees now because I hate stunting my plants. If you have height issues you can always bend instead of topping. But if you are gonna top it is best early veg.

I'm not overly concerned with heigh. I have about 7ft, so that should be able to accomodate most heights. I didn't realize I should have done it earlier. Maybe I'll just let these grow for the month. This is part of the reason I wanted to use bagseed for my first grow. I have a grow to learn along the way even if I do screw up a little.

Don't fear the plant! The plant is our friend. It will grow no matter what and is very forgiving. You are gonna do great!
