First Go With Hindu Kush By The Bears

Ok. A week ago tonight seeds were ordered from the great U.K. 10 Hindu Kush beans from Gypsy Nirvana. Over the past week we have been building this grow cab pictured below in the attachments. This will be our first grow and is also our first cab setup. This cabinet has been in the back of my mind for years now and it was built according to plans.

Lights ::

Agro Max 400 HPS will be used all through veg and flower. Magnetic remote ballast on 120v. Cheesdick reflector due to space limitations but i'm not too worried considering such high light output. Pretty much 100 watts / square foot.

Exhaust ::

4" Inline Can Fan pulling air through a Can Fan carbon filter at 142 CFM. 8' dryer duct hose used with 4" clamps all around. 4" hole cut out in wall behind cab with flange attached. Air tight, smell free exhaust pumping straight into the a/c intake zone and redirected right back into our own humble abode.

Medium ::

This grow will be an all organic, soild based affair. We are lucky enough to have a local indoor grow superstore within 20 minutes drive of the house able to supply us with a full line of Fox Farm soil and nutrients. We will be using the Ocean Forest soil.

Nutes ::

During veg we will be using Fox Farm grow big as the main feeding source. After we move into flowering season it will be switched to Fox Farm Big Bloom, with maybe a one time dose of something special like the Tiger Bloom.

I think that pretty much explains what we have going on here so check back soon for an image update. Tomorrow is day 8 so we are hoping very much that the beans will have arrived by then.

I appreciate the interest and good luck in all your growing

P.S. Comments and questions are welcomed.

No beans again today :(. I realize i more than likely jumped the gun on this but I went ahead and ordered some more seeds from another supplier just so I don't end up waiting a week and never seeing this first order. And if they do still come, then I will have 5 feminized Arjans Haze #3 beans to start while the Hindu Kush is going through its flowering phase.

We are really anxious to get started on this little project seeing as how the cabinet is all ready set go to house the little beauties =)

Well it is about damn time. The day I finally give up and stop waiting for the beans, they show up. I took a few pictures of the beans and their packaging, they are below.

I also included a few updated pics of the cab, i believe it is all ready to go now. We ran some temp checks and found it was getting too hot so i installed another inline fan to pull another 86cfm into the cabinet of much colder air.

All sealed up, painted up, and ready to roll. I will be tossing all 10 of these seeds into peat pods tonight to get them started for the big show. Although only 4 max will be flowered, i want to try and ensure my chances of getting at least 4 females...which probably will not happen, but oh well. There is always cloning, and the next harvest.

We are super fuckin excited about this as it is our first grow and all. There will no doubt be plenty of pictures to go around. Wish us luck! As always, questions and comments are welcomed.

Alright we decided to wait until we had something worthy of presenting before posting again so here is a picture update. These are the 7 hindu kush seedlings at exactly 5 days...to the hour. 10 seeds were germinated, 2 aborted, 1 didn't pop the first time, and 7 are potted up and receiving 24 hours a day of 400watt hps light.

I also included a nice picture of a new piece i bought for my gf. That's some bad ass glass :blsmoke:. Actually this was supposed to be her turn to post but studying for finals can really cut out on your gardening time. Oh well, it's almost summertime.

Enjoy the update and happy growing

Time for another update and I gotta be honest. Things are not looking too good for quite a few of our plants.

Temps are way too high due to the 400w hps bulb in there, but a pyrex bake a round tube is on the way. Once it arrives we will be making a cool tube out of it and retubing the ventilation system to include pulling hot air right off the bulb. This should definitely help with the temps and stale air issues.

The first set of 3 fingered leaves on this one seem to be some funky 4 fingered leaves :cry: this can't be good.

Poor little guy is lookin rough. Droopy, crunchy, and currently experiencing a halt in growth :cry:

Yep, same thing here. More crunch. I accidently spilled some of the watering water on the leaf and the light dried it out. (More sad faces here)

This here is a bag seed plant that was started maybe 4 days ago. The guy i got the herb from claimed it to be "Afghan" but you know how that goes

This is the Hindu Kush seed that didn't want to germinate the first time but has since come around.

And here we have a tasty J rolled up in a cellulose paper

So for now things are not looking too good but i know they will come around. For now we will just keep it simple, let em dry out before the next watering, and do everything we can to keep the temps down and pull in some fresh air for the little ladies.

This morning I woke up and decided it was just way to hot in the cabinet. These little babies are stressed enough by my mistakes, the least I can do is eliminate the heat issue...and i did :mrgreen:

It took me a few hours to re-route all of the ventilation, move the location of the fan, yadda yadda...but after all that the temps are so much lower. I know these little ladies appreciate it much.

The new addition is a 6" cool tube. Since all my previous ducting and fan is 4", i had to throw in some adapters to get everything worked out nicely. at first i was worried that changing the size of the duct back and forth would create a lot of drag and slow down the air but that is definitely not the case. Before the cool tube my hand was comfortable about 4-6" under the bulb...now i can safely touch the glass that is maybe an inch from the bulb:mrgreen:

So temps are down to just under 80, once its flowering time I know the night time temps will be much lower...woo hoo!!

Yeah they are going through a rough time right now, but i see them making an excellent recovery in the next 3 days. Hopefully after that we will see some new growth and progress.

The updates will definitely keep coming, thanks for checking out our grow!!

And as for the "Freak", any plant is welcome to stay as long as i've got room, and i don't know for a fact its a male. =)

It's great to have you here, I have actually been keeping an eye on your grow as well, trying to get an idea of what our little ladies will look like on down the line.

Thanks man. I put the fans in for that reason, and for more circulation. Hopefully they get the job done.

Here we are now 3 days later and the ladies are looking much, much better. The heat is not much of an issue anymore, the fans are blowing air all over the place, thickening up the stems, giving my babies some fresh air...yeeeeeah.

I picked up a pH meter as well a few days ago and did some investigating. What I found was that the water I was using had a pH level of 8.1. Yes, isn't that graaaaaand. So I picked up a bottle of pH down and handled the problem. My plants are loving me more and more every day :mrgreen:

I also cut out a hole in the floor of the cab and installed a grill intake with filter, just like the ones in apartment a/c's. What this is doing for me is centralizing the air intake to one entry which i am able to clean with a filter (which is very easily changeable) I am very excited about having the intake on the floor because I feel that is the best way to bring fresh air in as it will be pulled up through the plants, passing over them as it is carried up...I dunno if it makes sense...just helps me sleep better.

So I just got done watering, gave them the first dose of nutes. Medium strength Fox Farm Grow Big pH'd at 6.3. I decided to wait until morning to take pictures of the progress seeing as how I think tonight could be a big night for them :blsmoke:

So stay tuned for the update. Pictures coming tomorrow of the progress thus far. Happy growing peoples.

For the past few days my digital camera and my computer have been fighting, so no pictures. I guess they finally settled their differences tonight as everything is working well.

Got some more pictures here for your viewing pleasure. These plants have already been through a lot, and we have just been patiently waiting for them to come around. All in all they do look pretty decent, much better than when we got started.

One problem we do seem to notice though is that two of the plants are doing this weird leaf curl under thing. We did some research but were unable to find much information. Let us know if you got any ideas please?!

So far this is our strongest, most vigorously growing plant of the lot. Very bushy, short, squat, and putting out leaves all over the place

This is an "up the skirt shot" of the same lady. Currently the only plant growing foliage down there.

This one here is the poor little feller with the curly q leaves :cry:. Any ideas peoples?

Hope you enjoy the update, and please let us know if you have any ideas on what we might be suffering from here. Thanks peoples, and happy growing.

After posting a thread in the "Help my dying plant!?!?" forum, I decided that it is quite possible I am not watering these little critters enough, also...maaaaaybe I need to move the light up a bit more? Eh? Well I tried it tonight. The light is up another 10 inches and they all got a big healthy watering at a pH of 6.0. If they take well to this I think I may begin a veg nute regiment for them soon.

I tossed one of my sweet basil seedlings into the cabinet with them to help keep them company :blsmoke:

My last post didn't take. I just came back to check on my thread here and noticed my most recent post is nowhere to be found. SO, let's try this again shall we :blsmoke:

If i remember correctly I said something about how I have taken them from 24/0 to 18/6. Also I did some transpotting since the last post. The little pots they were in just weren't cutting it.

I am becoming more and more convinced that I got a shady batch of seeds. All of the plants are so extremely different from each other and 3 of them prefer to grow even numbered leaf sets (friggin weird)

Two of them however are looking pretty damn swell and I am hoping at least one of them is female so that I can hang onto this Hindu Kush family line.

Anyways, pictures are below...finally got some decent ones. Enjoy, and thanks for checkin us out.

All of the large plants in green pots are 26 days from the drop of the seed into the peat pot. The two smaller ones are at 18 days.

Time for another update, but sadly no plant pics this time. For the past 3 days they have all been on an 18/6 light schedule but this morning when the lights went off at 8:00, we started flowering.

The plants are really a lot smaller than we wanted to flower them at but they are in a healthy growth stage right now so I know they will explode over the next few weeks, we might even end up not losing out on lost veg time.

Plus the name of the game now is clone the future mothers, and I can't really do that until they do explode and show me some sexy hairs. Yesterday I decided to built an aero tub for after these soil babies are done flowering. If it all goes well we will more than likely stick to aero. I love the idea of soil, and the finished product, but there are too many things about our situation that force us to seek alternative methods. Plus, you can't really beat a 12 day veg cycle after the clone is rooted. Daaamn. :blsmoke:

Ok so all we have today is some pictures of the aero tub. I have not decided whether to grow 4 decent sized plants in this thing or more like 8 lollipopped shorties...but i still have time to decide on that. Any suggestions?

About the tub ::

26 gallon tote
1/2 inch pvc tubing
500 gph pond pump
360 degree jet spray tips

I was worried about these tips not putting out enough water, and not getting it high enough but i took these pictures after running the tub, with lid on, for about 20 seconds...and then waiting for a few minutes. There was still nice drops and fine mist over a good part of the inside, so I feel pretty good about this. I have a bunch of left over nozzles so if I decide to go with the 8 lollipop plants I will toss another 4 or so in there. The nozzles are rated to put out 10-14gph so i imagine i could have at least 15 without affecting water pressure or nozzle output. Lucky for me I only need 8 or so max so im super safe :blsmoke:

Ok finally the pictures dammit.
