First Grow 400 Watt Mh/Hps Tent

Hey guys, I recently decided to try and grow my own plants. I will be getting a digital ballast for MH and HPS lights, a Secret Jardin DR120 Grow tent, 6'' Vortex Fan, Carbon Filter, Timer, PH meter, Thermometer/hygrometer, nutrients, sun lift hangers, and some ph up and down.

It's my first attempt ever at growing, but I've done a lot of reading and information gathering, and I'm pretty sure I have everything I need except for pots, soil, seeds and water. I'm obviously a newb at the process, but with a couple grow books at my side, and a little help from you veterans out there, I'm sure I can grow something decent.

So if there's any equipment you think I should have or is vital to the operation, please tell me. I'm going to order all the equipment in a couple days here so as soon as I get it all in (and seeds), I'll start posting some pictures for you all to critique. I'm planning on growing "Brainstorm" from Dutch Passion. It's "Northern Lights #5, hybridized with potent 100% Haze genetics."

Anyways, please feel free to comment and/or put in your 2 cents about what you think of my "setup-2-be" or any advice you'd like to give.

Well I ended up getting 5 feminized White Rhino Seeds from a seed bank today. So not what I planned, but just as good in my mind. They said it was a beginner friendly strain to grow; good for a newb like me. Placed my order for all my equipment today, should be processed and shipped within the next couple of days. I'll put up some pictures of everything once I get it all set up, hoping on getting some good shots throughout the grow period with my DSLR Camera, so they'll be great quality for you viewers.

Since I'm going to be groing in soil, is there any readily availible soil that you guys would suggest? Or should I just go down to the garden store and see what they have. I'm thinking at the moment that I'll probably get a bag of potting soil with a PH around 5.5-6.0 and then mix some pearlite in with it. What do you all think?

Getting really excited and can't wait to start, please comment.

Ok so I finally have all my equipment purchased and set up, so here it is. Man it's so beautiful. So I decided to germinate my seeds in sterilized ph balanced soil. I planted all 5 white rhino seeds in the larger pots. The single plant in there is a bag seed that I planted in a tobacco container in a sunny window with shitty soil. I transplanted it into the new, good soil so I'm sure it'll be in shock for a couple days but hopefully it'll get back to it's old self soon. Got them all under a 400w MH for veg.

Anyways, can't wait to here what you guys think about my setup and pics.

Also, if anybody has any tips on growing White Rhino Please do tell. I'm new, so I'm hoping for the best.

I'm having troubles keeping my temperature down around 75F. At the hottest part of the day, the tent seems to be averaging around 82.5F. At night time my lowest temp was 68F. I've heard a lot of people saying that 82 is a bit hot for daytime, but I've also heard that it's alright to be a bit hotter when it's in Veg, and can even promote faster growth.

I added a small fan inside to help circulate the air, and it went down to around 81-82. I'm wondering if you think this may still be too hot, or will it be okay for now? My main concern is will it be an acceptable temperature for the flowing cycle? If not them maybe what I'll have to do is Turn the light off in the daytime, as to not add to the already hot, summer day, and instead turn them on at night when it's a bit cooler.

I'm probably getting a bit ahead of myself, but I'd really like to hear what you all think.

You need to run a relective hood. Run it threw the filter then lights and then out.
Yea turn them off in the day time for sure. watch out for light leaks tho.

I wish I could, but if you look at the picture of my reflector, it's not enclosed. It's not an air-cooled reflective hood unfortunately, otherwise I would have it exactly as you say. I might end up purchasing another reflective hood; one that I can vent easily, I suppose I'll just have to wait and see.

I'VE GOT SEEDLINGS!!! So I went out of town for 24 hours, and when I got back I had seedlings poking their heads out. I had plastic wrap over the containers to keep the soil moist while the light was running for my bag seed plant. Unfortunately I think that was a bad move on my part because when I took off the wrap, one of my seedlings had some white fuzzies around the stem. Looked it up and confirmed my thoughts of it being fungus/mold. I seems to have dried out nicely but that last seedling's stem now looks white and shriveled. I'm fearing the worst for it. As for the others, they look great.

Here are some pics for you all to look at, tell me what you think of the last pic with the white looking stem. Think it might still make it?

Well Three of my seedlings are doing great. One is growing a little slow, but still growing. I gave the "shwag" plant some nutes and cut off the two lower yellowing leaves and it perked up a little, so I gave it a little more the next day and it perked up even more :)

The fourth seedling with the dry looking root is doing surprisingly well, it's first set of leaves is actually growing. I'm still kinda worried cuz the root still looks dry and it looks kinda flimsy in the soil.

As for the last seedling, when it came up the Cotyledon's were conjoined along one side. I took a razor blade and gently cut where it looked like they should be separated and as soon as I made a tiny cut, it seemed to tear apart very easily along where it looked like the leaves should be separated. So it looks like it has proper two Cotyledon's now, but it isn't showing any signs of putting out it's first set of true leaves. I'm guessing it's just a freak of nature.

Anyway, tell me what you all think about the two seedlings.

Well I scrapped the one seedling that wasn't showing any first leaves and transplanted my "shwag plant" from it's tobacco container to a real pot. Turned the lights back to full power (400w) as well now that the other seedlings have their first leaves. It's about 2 feet above them. So it's down to five plants now, so I just have to wait and see if the "shwag plant" is a female, and make sure all the others are female as well. They should be as they are feminized. Other than that, everything's good. I'll have some pictures tonight.

Day 10

I finally took some pics. They're all looking pretty damn good soo far. The "shwag" plant has grown a lot since the last pics as you can see and so have the seedlings.

I have a couple of questions though. First of all, the leaves are curling up a little bit on all the plants, the worst being in the pictures below. I looked it up and the only post I could find was a dude with a 1000w MH that he had too close to the plants, like a foot away. My light hood is only housing a 400w MH and it's approx 2' 6'' away. Do you think that my light may still be too close? Should I maybe turn in down to 275 or 250? Or do you think it could be another problem. I haven't fed them any nutes as my soil contains nutes, so it should be okay for a couple weeks.

At the moment I can't remember what my second question was, cuz I'm too stoned :P

I'm really interested in hearing what you all think about the curling in the pics below. Thanks

last set of pics didnt work buddy?

Ive subed to your thread too...only problem is your is depressing as you have all the proper stuff in comparion so mine lol. Looks like a nice setup though ;)

As for your problem i cant see what your pics look like so general rule of thumb:
poke your finger an inch into the soil...if its moist leave it!...if its wet CAREFULLY break up the soil to try aerate it more as its too wet.
If its only seedlings dont go nuts with the nutes. After my first week i gave them a 50% solution which they seem to have reacted to quite nicely. Dont kill your plants with kindness!! Let the little bastards cry for food first :P

Other than that dont really know what the issue is sorry mate. I dont use HPS/MH so i cant comment on light. ALSO make sure you got a fan in there. It should help remove hotspots (i think) and also helps to strengthen the stems. Wind is natures way to tell a plant to harden the fok up :)

Yeah, sorry about the pics, I have my journal in my profile now, so that's where the pictures are now. I guess that's the proper place for me to have a journal I was told, so I transferred everything to there. Just go to my profile and click on "read journal posts" or something like that

As far as the twisting leaves, it seems to have only affected the bottom leaves. I searched it up for a while, and I think my soil might have been slighty "hot" (high in nutrients). But they seem to have handled it now, and are growing great now.

Here's the link to the updated journal. https://www.rollitup.org/blogs/243654-biffchicken.html

I just bought the DR120W, the DR120 was too big and the DR80 was too small. I love this thing, can't wait to get my temps under control so I can throw some clones in there

Good luck with your grow
